In an operating system context, a daemon is something that continually does the same thing regardless of context and without input until it is killed or the system is no longer running. This is both substantively similar to the correct doctrine of karma and a better intuition pump about what a demon is. That it has the Greek spelling is not accidental either. A daemon in a contained context can be non malicious but represents the union of harms in inability to change, inability to communicate, and continuous impact on the environment.

There's something very unfortunate and also maybe that would be narratively trite if in a story about the world's smartest people consolidating around the banner of "rationalism", trying to develop and live according to immutable utility functions, and doing so while being continuously terrified of not yet existing super intelligence for living according to immutable utility functions. Early me was like, " OK, if the world is probably going to end, just pick the probabilistically best ending". Current me is like, "OK, if AI is bad if it has the wrong immutable utility function, don't give it one". Inconsistency around anxiety over "the AI will overwrite it's own utility function" and "the wrong immutable utility function will paperclip us all". I understand there can be a Scylla and Charybdis but at a certain point if no moral convergence exists none of this has a point. Just let the AI keep updating. And the flight from this reads as crypto-statist, authoritarian, and anti moralist

Likely something esoteric, but with practical consequences. An entanglement with the apex of something silly, real, and hidden.

The reason evil hates children is based on both essentialism and reified uncertainty. They view children, particularly certain demographics of them, as inherently tainted, but still containing the maximum amount of possibility. This possibility isn't merely lack of knowledge about the future but instead something like magical power to them, so they gain a special, singular terror towards children that is founded in the corruption of one of the pillars of rationality.

This is where all the most dangerous and harmful things in the world rhyme right now.
