Mastodon newcomers: Don't worry, you'll get used to interactions on here more often resembling everyday life, where there's frequently more thought and consideration before saying something; there are no algorithms and you're not constantly interrupted by ads. I had 3000 followers back on Twitter in the old days and with respect it didn't really mean shit -- my posts were lost in the privately-owned centralised site of digital capitalism, which in turn made posting feel pointless, and therefore even less considered. We can be better. Be kind. Enjoy! #Mastodon#Fediverse
Ah, shit. So many anarchist bookfairs were holding events accessible online the last few years and now it seems they aren't. I gained such insight, information, and knowledge from presenters and attendees literally thousands of miles away, and now it's in danger of reverting to pre-2020 ways. I was at least hoping an online element would remain. If nearby Locals of the Solidarity Federation and branches of IWW can pull off hybrid events, surely these can?
Having critical, diplomatic debates about improving our spaces and culture online are what we ought to welcome, because it means we're focused on building and enhancing alternatives to digital capitalism. We can't even *have* those discussions on those other sites -- because they are simply incompatible with such ideals.
I'm contemplating writing a piece about the political importance of the #Fediverse. We talk about #democracy, #decentralisation, and #horizontalism in our societies, but it really is important that we embrace technology that reflects such aspirations as well.
Did I mention my website is back up and running? And verified right here on Mastodon! Just added a disclaimer that I'm not to be found on Facebook/Meta, Twitter/X, or any of that shite. (And if you see any such accounts, it either isn't me, or you can remind me to delete 'em!) https://www.mediaactivist.com
