@darwinwoodka @HistoPol @Gargron You mean Takei? Love the guy, but everybody's got George. His account is... mostly not him, but also entirely made out of reposts across Masto, BlueSky and Threads. I don't know if he's still on Twitter, too, or which other places.

The celebs from that list that aren't doing that have largely left, barring a couple.

@HistoPol @Gargron Oh, boy, there are some depressing facts about that list, including how a big chunk of the most followed celebrities in it are not active on Masto anymore at all (Gaiman seems to have landed on BlueSky, whoever runs Takei's account seems to be crossposting, mostly).

I'm fine with Masto not being celebrity-driven. Love it, in fact. But still. Sheesh. It does explain why checking if you can see follow that one Threads account would get that high on the list, though.

@atomicpoet That's not how social media design works, though. It's not about not being able to search yourself, it's about not being searchable and the search not driving hositle posting. It's not about not being able to QT, it's about callout QTs not being the main mode of interaction.

You can't make all social media to all people, the absent features are part of the design. Which is why nobody cares that those features are already availabl ein other applications.

This is all heavily retroactive categorization. Email isn't any more federated than phones or text messages. It's a working analogy for how posts are transfered here, but that's about it.

IRC was definitely not "federated", servers were just grouped into standalone networks. Sometimes.

XMPP sure, but that came out alongside AIM and MSN and was never that popular in comparison. Hardly a more federated, less branded past era of the Internet.

Yeah, I agree. There is connective tissue with that era here, but it's not the same.

And there's also some amount of nostalgia goggles about how viable a lot of it was and how suitable for mass adoption. A big difference between the protocols-based internet is that it was orders of magnitude smaller and more homogeneously tech-savvy users. But that's a different caveat, I think.
