This is all heavily retroactive categorization. Email isn't any more federated than phones or text messages. It's a working analogy for how posts are transfered here, but that's about it.
IRC was definitely not "federated", servers were just grouped into standalone networks. Sometimes.
XMPP sure, but that came out alongside AIM and MSN and was never that popular in comparison. Hardly a more federated, less branded past era of the Internet.

@MudMan @youronlyone @atomicpoet @pablowapsi I think you are right that "federation" might not be the best word for what I think this thread is discussing.
What I remember is an Internet built from protocols... NNTP, IRC, Gopher, HTTP, etc. Anyone could implement those protocols. Some of them had s2s links and others were just c2s.
The newer model differs in that it's proprietary services and apps and brands all coupled together.

Yeah, I agree. There is connective tissue with that era here, but it's not the same.
And there's also some amount of nostalgia goggles about how viable a lot of it was and how suitable for mass adoption. A big difference between the protocols-based internet is that it was orders of magnitude smaller and more homogeneously tech-savvy users. But that's a different caveat, I think.

My usage today is more broader than was originally discussed.
Mycelium (s.) is a network of fungal threads. So, many mycelium, mycelial, is a network of network of fungal threads (did that make sense?)
If we use it in the federated/federation sense, Mycelial Network is the following:
1. Mycelium Fediverse
2. Mycelium #XMPP / #Jabber
3. Mycelium #Matrix
4. Mycelium #ATP
And in between them are bridges (or portals?) which allows cross communication. (Hopefully we get one for ATP.)
It can also cover what has been discussed on this thread like: eMail and IRC.
Or, #SocialWeb is more than enough to describe it all together?
