@justjustin Thanks, but I am all good on #Mastodon, #PeerTube, and now #PixelFed. I am trying to minimize, and there was really nothing Facebook brought me that something like Twitter didn’t also bring me. I am relieved to have fewer platforms in my life.
I've made a final decision on it: I am leaving Facebook and Instagram. I have barely used them for 2.5 years, and they add no value to my life or my relationships. I am working to get a copy of my data and then I will shut them down.
At that point, my devotion to the #fediverse will be almost total. The only social network I will still be on is LinkedIn, if you don't count YouTube (but I run a PeerTube instance, so....)
@lps I get that they have interests to protect. I'm just not willing to get caught up in that. Sometimes, you just want to share lecture and teaching material.
It's partly out of necessity. YouTube doesn't allow me to post my "teaser trailer" videos for my classes, which often have copyrighted music (which I acknowledge) but used for parody purposes.
YouTube has also flagged some teaching videos because they are about using scientific thinking to test claims, but their algorithms think I am advocating for those (sometimes dangerous) claims. It takes work to undo their block, and I grew tired of it.
@mayintoronto That is very cool! We do love working with co-op students, and we're excited to welcome a new class this summer. We just welcomed the winter term students to site to begin their projects.
@monnier Only in the most literal sense of "subvert", "to turn from below" ... our goal is to turn human innovation and ideas into discoveries from far below the surface of the Earth. 😃
@SNEWS Thanks! I do love my HALO shifts, and I feel super-bad I have this nasty habit of missing day 1 of 3 (always 3 shift days there are, no more, no less...).
I am on shift for the #HALO experiment right now. This is my last day. I have a track record of missing the first day of remote shift. It has to do with my calendar not being able to include the HALO calendar, and email reminders having to be selected manually to remind the next shifter. It's a whole thing. I love being on shift for galactic supernovas, but I hate systems that don't just work when it comes to helping people collaborate.
@ditsch42 I recently made the transition from ownCloud -> NextCloud. It was a scary process of upgrading from OC -> NC 25, then making 5 sequential upgrades from NC 25 -> 30. It’s scary, but it was worth it (it all worked out pretty well). I hope your experience is great!
If you want to see some of my #teaching and #ScienceCommunication effort, check out this video I made for high school students for their science and technology fair in 2021. I host it on my #PeerTube instance.
How to find people and communities, and how to be found by the people and communities with whom you want to connect. Also, tons of other basic tips and tricks.
Yes, the fediverse is different. But it is different in the same way a democracy is different from a dictatorship. Sure, you have to make more choices and less is spoon-fed to you... but these are your choices, and you hold the spoon.
We are almost back in #Sudbury and back at work at #SNOLAB. I want to take the time to thank my Wisconsin family for a lovely weekend. I appreciate the love and the laughs, @jodi , @sparky , @ConnorW , and @DrewWrasse, and everyone else at mom's house.
