Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Wednesday, 25-Dec-2024 04:46:24 JST Russ Garrett @ryanc Doesn't seem to be anything we can do as a channel owner. I assume it's based on a rather broad keyword match in the transcript.
Not sure if it still happens but there used to be one which came up if you even mentioned covid once...

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Sunday, 22-Dec-2024 00:02:40 JST Russ Garrett @cstross I've spent the last week down this rabbit hole and it's not been pleasant:
https://russ.garrett.co.uk/2024/12/17/online-safety-act-guide/
I don't think it's impossible for small sites to comply, but the guidance is terrible and it seems like it's always going to leave you with some risk.

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Thursday, 19-Dec-2024 17:45:00 JST Russ Garrett New version of my visualisation of world power networks mapped on OpenStreetMap, with data from today.
I've added power plants to this iteration - although these are covered by power lines in denser areas, I think they give a bit more detail in darker areas.
Rendered from 38.1 million power lines and 85,000 power plants in 86 seconds using datashader.

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Wednesday, 18-Dec-2024 03:41:58 JST Russ Garrett If you run a small online community in the UK (or with significant UK users), I spent most of yesterday reading hundreds of pages of Online Safety Act guidance and summarised it:
https://russ.garrett.co.uk/2024/12/17/online-safety-act-guide/
There's definitely stuff you have to do if you want to comply with this law...

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Sunday, 04-Feb-2024 07:16:23 JST Russ Garrett I still find it slightly astonishing that we sell £150k worth of tickets in 40 seconds using some software we wrote in our spare time.

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Nov-2023 01:17:15 JST Russ Garrett @manawyrm @ryanc MK/Honeywell are considered the gold standard brand for electrical hardware in the UK and they do make some which look to be decent (now even with PD). Haven't seen inside one though.

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Nov-2023 01:17:13 JST Russ Garrett @manawyrm @ryanc the other problem with these USB charging sockets is that they are encouraging more people to change their sockets who don't really have the expertise to do it safely...

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 07-Jul-2023 00:16:52 JST Russ Garrett @Tupp_ed I think it's especially damning because the UK still (currently) has exactly the same privacy laws as the EU...

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Sunday, 18-Jun-2023 20:25:30 JST Russ Garrett @bebatjof @goatsarah one of the theories is that they were primarily annoyed at the fishing boats but they found sailboats more enjoyable to attack, and it became more of a play/bonding thing.
Interestingly this behaviour started in mid-2020, after boat volumes reduced due to covid lockdowns. I wonder if they thought they could make the boats go away again.

Russ Garrett (russss@chaos.social)'s status on Monday, 23-Jan-2023 05:40:06 JST Russ Garrett I was going to upload some of the X-rays of my leg to Wikimedia Commons, as they're a lot better than the existing images on Wikipedia, but I just realised I don't own the copyright to them.
It's kind of weird that someone else owns the copyright to an image of my own bones.
