@annika Got a flashback to a very traumatic experience when I was probably 6 or 7 years old. My most heartfelt sympathies for your kiddo...

@molly0xfff A toast to every developer who's been asked to write something like this and just rolled their eyes and said no.

If you know anyone who has any influence within the NHS, please help them understand what a gawdawful company Palantir is before the UKs healthcare system gets suckered into a deal with the worst company in data management history (and there's plenty of competition for that rank - Palantir earned it).

@clacke ...when it sounds like they're using a voice modulator from a warzone over a bad CB radio? I know it well...

@clacke This was my constant soapbox speech when building data models for corporate software projects. Not only do developers and stakeholders believe every address (and name, and employment situation, and vehicle, etc ) looks like theirs, they will actively fight you on any discussion of alternatives. It's thankless work...

@kaia If you follow that dividing line to the west, you end up in Canada, the home of the ketchup chip/crisp.

@futurebird As it turned out, the marshmallow test research wasn't reproducible. They tried a few times over the last decade or two (here's one article: https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/6/6/17413000/marshmallow-test-replication-mischel-psychology)

It did prove, however, that some people are just all too eager to seize upon findings that reinforce their preexisting beliefs and become "conservatives" who refuse to change in the face of contrary evidence.

The "marshmallow test" said patience was a key to success. A new replication tells us s’more.

The famous psychology test gets roasted in the new era of replication.

@futurebird Yeah, it got a lot of press, but hasn't stood up. My deep inclination to be cynical makes me suspect a degree of data manipulation in the original research (though quite probably not deliberate - we are all easily fooled by our own preconceptions)

My hobby is manually changing the values in URL parameters as entertainment for the folks reading the logs or viewing dashboard statistics later.
