@tragivictoria I hate docks so much in GNOME. 🥲 Its spatial model is so clean, consistent, predictable, simple and powerful and a dock breaks it in so many ways. I'm glad a dock is an option but I wouldn't even want it toggleable in Settings, an extension is the right place for that to me. Add a dock and suddenly you meen a minimize button, which also breaks apps, and the overview makes less sense, and is just an extra step to the apps list, and zt this point why not add desktop icons.

@tragivictoria @speaktrap Also I remember how Unity was designed: by asking Ubuntu users screenshots of their desktops and trying to mimick that and macOS. Limiting your design to what already exists and how users work around it and fiddle with it is how you end up with the UX mess we know. You need a step back, to think about interactions and their reason to exist.

@philn No, IIUC from what Joannie says here, Orca relies on speech-dispatcher, I assume it has a Spiel plugin? I found plugins for Festival and Flite on Fedora. I tried the Flite one, which gave me barely better result than espeak. In FLOSS projects we tend to accept to take responsibility for what we do, but we tend to reject responsibility for what we don't do, as if not doing it wasn't a choice, conscient or not. Choosing bit to work on something is still doing something, and we really need to learn to take responsibility for that. Collectively and individually. I am as responsible of the sore state of text-to-speech on FLOSS ecosystems like GNOME as everyone else.

I see many excited to attend FOSDEM and I'm super happy for you, but I'd like to ask you a favor: please wear a mask indoor at FOSDEM and in public transports. Protect yourself and others, stop the FOSDEM flu cult. You wanted to prove the organizers you're not accepting Jack Dorsey, please prove you're better than them by taking seriously the diseases they wont. I've seen enough friends and strangers become severely disabled or die from flu or covid, please refuse to take part in this. #fosdem

Starting right now I'll try to use my Linux smartphone again (OnePlus 6 with postmarketOS and GNOME Shell) instead of my Android phone. Let's see how long it takes before I'm out of blood from all the papercuts this time.

I worked around the lack of night light support via the Bedtime Mode extension, that removes one of my main issues with it. 🙂️ The lack of camera support is the biggest remaining one.

You can tell when a UI is developed by someone who'se not used to that, just by looking at how the code is structured, how failures are handled, etc.
