I see many excited to attend FOSDEM and I'm super happy for you, but I'd like to ask you a favor: please wear a mask indoor at FOSDEM and in public transports. Protect yourself and others, stop the FOSDEM flu cult. You wanted to prove the organizers you're not accepting Jack Dorsey, please prove you're better than them by taking seriously the diseases they wont. I've seen enough friends and strangers become severely disabled or die from flu or covid, please refuse to take part in this. #fosdem

Starting right now I'll try to use my Linux smartphone again (OnePlus 6 with postmarketOS and GNOME Shell) instead of my Android phone. Let's see how long it takes before I'm out of blood from all the papercuts this time.

I worked around the lack of night light support via the Bedtime Mode extension, that removes one of my main issues with it. 🙂️ The lack of camera support is the biggest remaining one.

You can tell when a UI is developed by someone who'se not used to that, just by looking at how the code is structured, how failures are handled, etc.

What I mean is in one case your code is procedural and communicate with another machine through an API, in case of error you can just bail out as it's part of your API, and in the other your code is event-driven and communicate with a user through a GUI, errors have to result into a working UI, even if that UI is just presenting an error message.

I think Settings is my favorite GNOME app, and I'm not joking. Files is a close second.

GNOME Software received a brand new systemd-sysupdate plugin. That was one of the last pieces needed to complete the migration of GNOME OS from OSTree to systemd-sysupdate.

@hj @rnd Well of course the goal isn't to try to fit everything, we never tried to fit GNOME Builder or Evolution, e.g., it's still OK for apps to require larger screens when relevant.

And if anyone doubts it's true, read police reports of detained ecologist activists. In 2022 I stopped using Twitter and got a bike, in 2023 I stopped using Google Calendar and got a pocket notepad and a wristwatch, and in 2024 I tried to read more (radical) news on paper, buying them cash. I feel in 2025 I really should stop using any Google product voluntarly (I still use Youtube, Maps, and Image Search a lot), replacing them with super private alternatives, ideally fully offline, or even replacing them with analog counterparts. 😬 Messaging will be for 2026 I guess. 😮💨
