trying to get a windows 95 virtual machine running, but the ISO i got isn't bootable so i'm starting with (free)DOS

huh, that's neat, the russian windows 95 install image also has belarusian and ukrainian as available languages

guess they divided the regional variants even more, because when i was installing windows xp back in the day, the russian install disc only had russian

i do think it's kinda funny that the installer for windows 95 is based on windows 3.11

googling the error message led me to a message board that told people to disable VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging, but i can't do that bc i'm running the virtual machine in KVM/QEMU

all i need to do is launch qemu directly and then specify the machine as isapc apparently

now i'm supposed to boot into safe mode and run some sort of amdk6fix to help it work

booting in safe mode shows me this weird error message (it's not actually meaningful text in russian or any other language i know, so no alt text this time), but it eventually loads

okay, i had to do some mount -o loop magic in order to make a floppy drive image containing the amdk6upd tool, but it seems to work now? let's see if it will boot in normal mode

okay, now it complained about an NDIS error, i removed the corresponding network driver from the configuration, and it boots

fun fact: virt-manager may not show sb16 as a valid sound card model that qemu supports, but you can type it manually and it will work!

i wonder if the same will work if i specify cirrus as the graphics card, because i don't want to be stuck at 640x480 16 colors for this thing

@joepie91 @tendstofortytwo yeah, like the whole idea of "you can slam your mouse cursor into the bottom left corner of the screen and click and you can be certain you'll open the start menu" is such a slam dunk, i don't know why they decided to get rid of that in favor of centered elements and a floating taskbar

#TIL there's settings in #OpenTTD to make it so that passengers and mail actually have places to go to, rather than just seeking transport anywhere

by default it's manual, making passengers and mail behave like other types of cargo

if it's "symmetric", then the game will generate passengers who actually want to get to available destinations, with the same number wanting to go both ways

if it's "asymmetric", then the distribution will not be symmetric, more passengers may want to go one way than the other
