Moderation cuts two ways. Yes, bigger servers have more posts and more posters to moderate. But they also, being larger, can field a well-trained moderation team.

With small servers, what you've typically got is one admin and maybe a couple of (volunteer) helpers. Maybe they are good at what they do. But maybe they're erratic, distracted, or just not suited to the task. It's quite difficult really, and more complex than one might think.

@thomasfuchs Do you think it's really dying? I follow almost nobody but photographers over there, and that part of the scene is enjoyable, from my perspective — though having said that, I do not spend much time there at all.

@sbarolo The deeper question for me here is: their college kid just called **on the phone**. I mean, how is this usually accomplished in that family?

I've been holding off really getting into pixelfed, though I've had an account for months, because I've been under the impression an iOS app was coming Real Soon Now. But instead there seems to be a stream of interesting innovations that — did I mention this — I'm holding off on investigating because, you know, no app.

I don't mean to be unfriendly about this, and I know you've got a lot going on.

I'm convinced the two-button solution you're contemplating — default server / "let me choose" — is the only one that will work, and the only one that is *fair to new users*.

Making signup a sort of roulette among multiple servers would expose newbies to the risk of problems that are not in your control, as well as create confusion as to who and what they are dealing with. If they have questions, whom do they ask?

@heinragas But where are these reports coming from? It would be surprising, I think, for @Gargron to leave the original, flagship Mastodon instance all but unprotected this way. I'd really appreciate hearing more specific details.
