The #asstodon thing has expanded beyond the Fediverse to the point where friends and relatives and people we barely know text us pictures of donkeys they encounter. Here are some wild burros that accosted a friend of ours who was out fishing in South Park, Colorado today. Descendants of the burros that worked as pack animals during the Colorado gold rush of the 1850s.

Lots of sky drama today, starting with the fiery sunrise…

I think I’ve rather come around to this position. Private land ownership is a way to avoid the hard work of building consensus in a community. And once consent is no longer a foundational principle, your “civilization” is always going to be full of slavery, depredation and exceptionally high levels of violence.

The donkeys watched me haul every bale into the barn and reached through the fencing to grab bites as they passed by. In donkey parlance this is called “helping.” #asstodon

They’ve decided it *might* be safe to stand in the same room as the traffic cone, just to get out of the hot sun.

But they’re not very happy about it.

I finally acquired a new traffic cone for the donkeys and presented it to them.

They fled in horror.

I love this field so much. I would paint it if I could. Humans never set foot here as far as I can tell, even though it’s right next door to us. It’s beloved of the deer, elk and wild turkeys, perhaps in part for the benign neglect.

Look. I’m not a big gourmet cook. I like to cook but I keep things simple.

However. I have one culinary PSA for you.

If you have never used whole cumin seed and ground it fresh in a mortar and pestle you are in for a real treat. It’s an entirely different spice than musty store-bought ground cumin. It’s bright and citrusy and just so amazing.

Example usage: put it with salt on some boiled potatoes with butter or olive oil and lemon juice and you will thank me. Or use a recipe if you must.

@jonny when they aren’t bonking each other with it or playing tug-of-war they try to interfere with the administration of public safety.

Before bedtime the donkeys put all their favorite toys away. This cracks me up every time. #asstodon

Our collapsing petrostate is doing all it can to prop up a doomed oil and gas industry by stopping renewable energy on federal land (most of the Western US). Utility bills are soaring and will only get worse. Long blackouts during heatwaves will be more frequent.

So ICE raided a construction site in our neighborhood and two of the workers tried to get away. They got in their truck, hit one of the ICE vehicles and drove off. The ICE officers *opened fire* on them. They abandoned their vehicle in the neighborhood to try to escape on foot. So now we’re all ordered to “shelter in place” and “stay away from windows” so the swarming gestapo can shoot up the place with a free hand.

The neighbor mini donkeys like to hang out near the fence line with our boys to form a nice herd and no doubt to protest the existence of closed borders and private land ownership.

Now both donkeys have moved into the horse’s 10x12 ft barn stall with him. 🤷🏼♂️
