Starting year 3 with no income now. We’ve basically decided not to sell the farm. We just can’t bring ourselves to do it. Instead we’re starting to liquidate retirement accounts. Here’s to being stupid! 🍻 At least there will be donkeys to share here.
Anyway, posting because I’ll be doing a demo of my still-half-baked (but cool) non-AI-that-works-like-AI thing today for a large residential solar company that truly needs it. Wish me luck. We could use a whole year of luck in 2026 ha ha ha! Yeah.
@inthehands if it hasn’t already been mentioned, Cory Doctorow @pluralistic has been presenting a great proposal for how smaller nations can hit the US power base where it hurts (while helping their own people) by taking advantage of Trump’s shredding of free trade treaties: treaties that locked the world into using monopolized American tech. The locks are gone now.
I read somewhere in the last day or two that learning is based less on remembering things than on our capacity to forget. This really resonates with me and has been one of the big lessons of 2025. Learning really new things makes big demands on our capacity to let go of what we think we know. Sometimes simple forgetfulness (which we usually curse when trying to learn) gives us the flexibility to make important discoveries and forge new mindsets.
Stood a long time this morning in the cold air, watching the full moon slowly sink into the purple mountains. Just feeling carried along by this most ancient dance.
This mule deer buck I ran into this morning probably weighed close to 300 pounds and didn’t seem the slightest bit concerned about me stopping to check him out.
One time a big buck like this was eating all our garden plantings and I tried to scare him off. He just squared up to face me with his huge rack, and after I’d stopped in my tracks for several seconds he kind of said “thought so” and went back to destroying the garden.
The mini donkeys: always plotting their next diabolical scheme. Don’t be fooled by their cute behavior or their adorably stubby legs. They are pure evil. #asstodon
The donkeys trim the grass very nicely but they leave these tansyaster “bouquets” popping up in the field. Either the flavor is as bad as the flowers are pretty or they just like the way the flowers liven the place up. #asterdon#bloomscrolling
Somehow internet videos don’t seem to give a fair impression of melodic range of donkey brays, which varies drastically from one individual to another. Yes, some donkeys have a screechy, harsh and dissonant musical style. But many offer long tuneful moans. Others emit plaintive songs that could be mistaken for the sound of a young person playing the clarinet with a solid week’s worth of practice under their belt. Well, until the end of the bray, then it’s more clearly a donkey. #asstodon
