What if computer games, but fun?

@piggo I know you can make an amber tincture. I'm also sure you can ferment oranges, but I'm not certain you could drink it without distilling first.

@piggo Mead is amber in color and is very good. Madeira as well. Both are kinda wine-adjacent drinks.

The concept of a "system programming language" was always suspicious to me. I feel like the best way of making an operating system is to start with a minimal virtual machine for some high-level language, and then write all the rest in that. Forth, LISP, Lua, whatever. It worked back when computers had a fraction of the speed and resources they have today, I don't see why it wouldn't work today.

@technomancy @pho4cexa To be honest, I wouldn't mind a dialect of LISP that recognizes that there are several kinds of parens possible, and makes use of them.

@technomancy @pho4cexa There can be more than one non-sexp syntaxes (syntices? English is weird). That's the whole point of s-expressions.

You want to explore mysterious advanced technology? Have secret organizations in your world, isolated from everything for hundreds of years before going extinct and leaving their tech behind.

Want to explore new and exciting territories and claim them in the name of whatever power sent you? Have large areas previously inaccessible due to natural or artificial disaster, and new tech and/or political climate that finally allows sending an exploration team.

You need dangerous alien monsters that you can slaughter by hundreds without moral qualms or worrying about collapsing the ecology? A military experiment that went out of control could fit the bill, with either robots, cyborg beasts, or quickly breeding custom animals.

You want weird looking humanoids? Humans might follow all kinds of fashions when medical tech advances.
Most aliens in the stories are thinly veiled foreigners anyways.

You want real non-human intelligence? Uplifted animals.

I think we need more science fiction that is not happening in space. It's not really a good place to be for humans, and that creates a lot of storytelling problems. Then authors have to invent magical solutions like wormholes and artificial gravity, and the whole thing is no longer science fiction, just complete fiction.

What is the fastest way of transferring an URL from one computer standing on your desk to the other, standing next to it, connected to the same network? Is is still typing it?

Why is all the good stuff always obsolete?

@agturcz Note that this map is made from the point of view of a British tourist, or more generally someone speaking a Germanic or Romance language. If you speak a Slavic language, you can reverse that map.

Is there a technical reason why modern programming languages don't handle smart quotes?

@aerique @technomancy This is something I can't understand myself too. Why did people stop using Jabber? I understand all those people who just used gChat or however it is now called, and never realized it was Jabber, were stopped when Google pulled the plug, but what about all the rest? A lot of people were using it before Google. I'm still using it to chat with my parents. There are clients for every platform, and a wide variety of reasonable servers you can run on a pi in your closet. So why?

@technomancy I really don't understand what's in it for them. According to all stats they publish, Fediverse is less than 1% of their users. Surely they don't care about it so much? Or maybe those stats are a bit exaggerated?

@aerique @technomancy How can it be threat to them? It's not a competitor, it doesn't do any business in the ad delivery markets, and it doesn't cater to their customers, the advertising and data mining companies. It is literally as far from their competition as it is possible to be.
