@sushee Wasn't Firefox open source, and therefore forkable? Isn't that precisely what safeguards open source projects from the original author turning evil?

Or did they manage to make this project so convoluted and complex, that they pretty much have a monopoly on its development, despite the sources being available?

Oh, right, and there are all those cryptographic keys that you need to make a working browser these days, that they don't make public...

@janl @sushee I don't know, maybe because it looks extremely similar and uses pretty much the same rhetoric? Only has smaller web designer budget, as of yet.

Those scientists can't be trusted, they have no spine at all, no loyalty. You show them new data and they change their minds instantly.

@spencerbeswick This is the landlord thinking, and sadly, it only works when you are born a landlord and inherit plenty of income sources. For sure, you can then devote all your time and energy to fun, with an occasional grand gesture doing something actually useful. If you were born in a factory worker family, tough luck. You learn that you have to work for anything you want, but that this work has real value. You won't waste your time, jump from one fancy to another when you get bored with it.

@tartley That's beside the point. Either view is an impossible ideal. Both are impossible in practice.

@VeryBadLlama the idea is good, but you have to work on the details, because I never pick up my phone

@technomancy I think that despite the surface similarity of mechanics, computer role playing games are completely different from pen and paper role playing games. I'm on the other side of the fence, though – I enjoy the computer ones (except the western style ones not so much, I like the Japanese ones more), but not the pen and paper. I find that dungeon exploration board games are more like the computer role playing games.

@piggo Does it matter? Realistically, you can't defend against an attacker that has those resources. They can just bash down your doors at 4am, smash half your possessions, confiscate the rest, and put you in jail or worse at any moment they choose, with pretty much no consequences to themselves.

@piggo It's really not, just the channel is different. Let's be honest, no script kiddie is going to hatch a plot that takes two years to capitalize on. This person (or more likely a whole team) is doing this professionally. And there are pretty much two kinds of organizations that need such employees: governments and companies that sell to governments. And there is really nothing you can do to defend yourself from those. They just used gloves this time.
