@Dricc YouTube is my main source of income, and I make nothing from Peertube, so until this changes, the YouTube link will be the only one I post ;) Plus, at the time I post the video on YouTube, it’s not yet synced to Peertube, so the link doesn’t exist yet!

You can subscribe to the Peertube channel from Mastodon though, and get a post for every new video!

    • Vanilla OS

I gave a shot to @vanillaos, the immutable #linux distro that implements containers in the most transparent way possible.

So, let’s look at how it works, the things they do well (the best install and first run process I’ve ever see ), and the issues:

Chances are most of you know about some big names in #OpenSource and #Privacy, but there’s one FOSS champion you might not know: @Framasoft

They offer a bunch of services that are all open source, free to use, collect no data whatsoever, and that can help you replace some of big tech’s services. And a lot of them don’t even require an account!

So, let’s look at who they are, what they do, and the services you can use from them!

@killyourfm Thanks ☺️ I started using RSS when I started using Linux (because OIRC in Ubuntu 6.06, you got Liferea by default), and I never stopped since!

After talking about it with my Patreon supporters, and here on Mastodon, I decided to stop publishing to Odysee. I wrote a short blog post about the reasons, and the options people have to keep watching outside of YouTube if they want to:

    https://thelinuxexp.com/Im-leaving-odysee/

It's not a decision everyone will agree with, but it's the one I'm comfortable with.

Time for the weekly #Linux and #OpenSource news video!

In this one, we have @frameworkcomputer announcing a 16 inch laptop, with replaceable GPU expansion modules, we have @nextcloud releasing Hub 4, a new version with integrated AI tools, and a lot of updates to the core apps, and we have #Twitter planning to open source their algorithm at the end of the month.

Plus, screen sharing on Wayland should now work for every single app, and more!

    Oh what a terrible decision.
Canonical will prevent Ubuntu flavors to come with Flatpak preinstalled, as they want to push snaps.

Kind of a Microsoft-like move here. Really bad.

And this week's #Linux and #opensource news video is finally here!

In this one, we have confirmation that #Windows 11 sends data to third parties after a fresh install, without user consent, we have @fedora moving to Flathub in their next release, an AI tool that violates #FOSS licenses, @thunderbird sharing a roadmap and some interesting history, and @gnome Software getting some nice performance improvements:

@thatonecalculator Of course, Apple is a bad company. But when comparing to Google, I mean, they’re exactly the same.

@thatonecalculator Most of the video talks about Android, though, not a proprietary platform.

And everyone has every right to dislike, it’s just frustrating when you know most people did it because « oh no Apple bad »

Wow people don’t like it when you don’t like the thing they like.

Never had such a bad like to dislike ratio on a video before. From the comments, I know it’s not that the video is bad.

It’s Android people not liking someone saying « Android doesn’t work for me ».

    Baffling.

The more I learn about AI tools for writing, generating images, etc… The more I think they should all be put on pause while regulation is put in place to decide who owns what and how you can decide to not have your stuff used to train an algorithm, or what you’re entitled to if it is indeed used.

Datasets used should be fully open and accessible and it should be possible to say you don’t want your creations to be included, and have them « unlearned » as well, if that’s even technically feasible

After that LastPass fiasco, I got a bit worried about storing my credentials on a service I don’t host myself, so I just spent 3 hours going through all the passwords I had on my Firefox account, moving them to Nextcloud passwords on my own instance, and modifying every single one of them with a different password, so no 2 accounts use the same one. It was extremely boring, but well worth it, and I cleaned up a TON of old passwords that kept being suggested but were out of date.
