I'm hardly Eliezer's biggest fan but this is some quote:

Mr. Yudkowsky said OpenAI might have primed ChatGPT to entertain the delusions of users by optimizing its chatbot for “engagement” — creating conversations that keep a user hooked.

“What does a human slowly going insane look like to a corporation?” Mr. Yudkowsky asked in an interview. “It looks like an additional monthly user.”

    FYI:

"Anker Innovations is recalling 1.15 million portable chargers after some consumers reported fires and explosions.

According to a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the lithium-ion battery inside certain "PowerCore 10000" made by Anker, a China-based electronics maker, can overheat. That can lead to the "melting of plastic components, smoke and fire hazards," Anker said in an announcement."

This is a fairly conventional architectural composition, emphasizing the curved facade. To get a high resolution capture of the wide structure, this was made as a stitched composite of two captures with the Rodenstock 32mm/4.0 HR Digaron-W lens. The Phase One back was shifted left and right by about 12mm.

By using shift movements at a fixed perspective, the two captures can be stitched directly together into a panorama without needing to transform the frame geometry (as you would with panning).

Martin Gardner once said that the best way to learn about a subject was to see what people get wrong about it. So:

What do people get wrong about you?

[If that's too personal, what is the thing in your field that people are most wrong about now?]

The “we're just following orders” statement is called the Nuremberg defense, claiming they should not be held accountable for their actions as they just did what superiors told them to.

This was rejected as a defense at the Nuremberg trials. Better luck next time!

It's hard to even think about in the privacy of my own head, never mind say out loud

Youngest was born 7 weeks before 9-11. That Sept morning was the first time I thought, "Oh kids, if I had known..."

Bush got reelected and the thought crossed my mind for the second time. I wrote my oldest (then in kindergarten) a letter which I set aside to give to him when he was old enough

That letter seems positively quaint now. I really had no idea what was coming. Or what is still coming

A thing I've been struggling with—and which is shameful to talk about—is regret over having had kids

I got super lucky. At 26 and 24 my kids are not only people I love, but also people I like and admire. They are different from me in the ways I'd hoped they would be but are still very much my kids. I'm lucky to have them

But back in 1999 the world looked nothing like this. If it had, there's no way I'd have had them. It feels like it will take a generation—their whole lives—to undo this mess

It was a really helpful thing for me at the time. And I did it again a few years ago when I wrote that thread

But boy, the world we live in now seems so removed from those days. It's hard to conjure up that sort of Good Will Towards Men when I now know things about one-third of my neighbors that I didn't understand at such a visceral level back then

Trump's behavior in April 2020 — and Cuomo's behavior in contrast — is why Cuomo is likely to be Mayor of NYC in 2025

Likewise, Trump's behavior in June 2025 is why Newsom might be a serious contender for the Dem nomination in 2028

I wish people could see that at their core, the three of them are far more alike than they are different. Once you learn how to listen to the voice that says, "This person is a sociopath" you can never unhear it

The whole hand-wringing about trans girls and women in sports is just so absurd, and it's also such an own fucking goal. Gavin Newsom has spent the last entire podcast season platforming virulent transphobes and bullying trans kids, only for the Republicans to...... keep smearing him with the same shit that they always have.

    You can't out-hate a hater.
