I had some thoughts on this very topic about a month ago. I mention Affinity and DxO as alternatives to Photoshop and Lightroom. This was before Affinity became free!

It's notable that my videos mostly struggle to get 1,000 views. This one has cleared 100,000. We are not alone in feeling conned by the big software brands.

I think Nepal is one of the most rewarding places in the world for any photographer. So much inspiration. So much to love.

    My chai dude in Kathmandu.

I have mixed feelings about being back in Nepal. So many great people here, but also an incredible scale of poverty. Small things make a big impact here.

Roughly two decades ago I came across the concept of "YayMe.txt".

This fella described how he keeps a file on his computer, and everyday when something nice happens he'll open up that text file and write down the date with whatever the nice thing was.

It might be that he rode his bike to work that day instead of driving the car. Or a client who sent a nice email to show their appreciation. He just keeps adding to the YayMe.txt file, so that over time it becomes a compendium of good things that have happened in his life. Mostly, things that reflect on himself.

Because we have no trouble reminding ourselves that we are too old, or too fat, or too bald, or too slow, or lack skills, or lack confidence, or whatever. We do this all day every day without even trying. YayMe.txt is a way to try and remember that there are good things in your world, and that for the most part you are one of those good things.

Two decades later I have a file in my notepad titled "YayMe.txt", where I drop screenshots of those emails and posts and whatever else that marks today as a good day. I start a new one each year, because the note file gets very full.

    This is magnificent photography.

I've been to a few of these Russian islands with discarded research cabins and the like. Skilful use of the drone, not for a "birds eye" view but to simply get close enough to the bears without triggering an attack.

One of my favourite things about these cockies is their attitude. This crest action when they land is just a taste of what they're capable of. When they wanna get rowdy at each other and scream from the rooftops, that crest gets a workout. It's marvellous.

Okeys I got my instance back under control and have PleromaFE back online.

    - I had no idea that the boxes expanded on the fly as the post is typed. That is good to know. I can see that works well.

    - One of the big pluses with PleromaFE is that you can more quickly move through a timeline compared to Soapbox. When my brain is moving fast, this is a bonus. And I can see that being able to respond to a post without leaving the timeline can be helpful to keep your train of thought.

    - It's a fine line between quick access to things, versus crowding the screen.

    - I'm a very visual person and so little things like chunky icons or mis-aligned icons tends to distract me. Even the shading on buttons can impart a design signal.

I'll spend the next few days just with PleromaFE and see if my brain finds any specific friction.

Thanks so much for taking time to look at this.

[ I've just spent the evening trying to switch back to Pleroma-FE and spend more time with it. I grabbed an updated Soapbox a week ago and it's blatted my static folder... so I'm trying work out how to get back to Pleroma-FE. It's ignoring my admin settings! ]

Anyway, I will figure it out. Then I'll look more closely again at your suggestions.

One more thing that was a big issue for me, which I forgot about, was having a larger box to write my posts in. One reason I started exploring self-hosting an instance was to give myself freedom for very long posts. Is there flexibility on the Pleroma-FE interface to create a nice big space for typing long posts?

Am attaching a screenshot of this post by way of example.

I should add, I'm a 55 year old ex-geek with bad eyesight. My feedback is probably not going to reflect what a lot of younger audiences are thinking. I might be boring :)

Yeah I didn't want to throw out too many specifics to my reply. Happy to elaborate more.

The UI is very busy and makes me anxious having that much jammed into a screen. It's trying to do a lot all at once. I'd like to be able to just rearrange what is on screen, or scale back sections to an icon instead for example.

The main section with the feed in PleromaFE is especially intense. Tight fonts and lots of icons. Clicking on a post expands that thread, but I'd much prefer to have a break-out section where highlighted or expended content can be viewed instead. A second column for example, like the advanced web UI on Mastodon.

Indeed that UI is a very effective and useful way to setup a screen, in my opinion.

Overall, the PleromaFE UI feels very dated. 90s dated. At the other end of the spectrum is Soapbox – very clean, and somewhat lacking in features. But it's a calm space and the UI is nicely responsive. It's very smooth. Maybe some inspiration to be found there.

    Those are my thoughts!

Search is not great. Really wish I could just find old posts from my own account more easily.

SoapboxFE is a slick interface but still a work in progress. Not everything works properly.

PleromaFE is very busy and not very tunable. Wish it could be tweaked to operate more like the advanced mode of Mastodon.

Muting words doesn't work in SoapboxFE or FediLabs App.

That is not a solution. That is capitalism failing and crushing a bunch of people each time it collapses under its own weight.

A lot of folks are very dismissive of the AirBnB problem. They don't wanna believe it's an issue.

They look at raw numbers and say things like, "it's only 30,000" homes that are no longer rental properties, just build new ones!"

Which is bollocks anyway. But the other thing they ignore is the quality of housing. These are usually the most livable homes that end up in the hands of AirBnB. Homes that people can no longer buy to live in, or rent. It pushes up the price of everything else in the market. Even shitty homes are pushed out of reach. We end up paying more and still don't have access to something half decent.

AirBnB is toxic to any society. It's concentrating wealth into the hands of a few.

    Even a single decade ago.

I remember when the royal wedding took place and the entire supply of chicken was diverted to the event and for a week or so you couldn't buy chicken momos anywhere. A friend told me that nobody in Bhutan was willing to wear the burden of killing wholesale quantities of chickens, so they just imported them from India instead.

Today that is no longer the case, they grow all the chickens they want locally.

Bhutan is changing in a lot of ways, mostly for the worse and mostly with far greater gravity than just the chickens. It's a society that has found strength on the idea of being happy with your lot in life, now tipped sideways by the internet and desire to possess all the things they see elsewhere in the world.

Used to be that a plot of land from the parents would allow oyu to grow enough rice to pay for a decent living. But growing rice doesn't buy iPhone and Landcruisers. A huge percentage of Bhutan's best have left the country since the pandemic, looking for greater wealth. It makes me very sad that they didn't see their existing lives as more valuable.

    But I digress :)

George Monbiot made a good point a few years ago about "lab grown meat", which sounds terrible at first but absolutely can taste great to those who enjoy the real thing. There exists a world not far away where no animal needs to die to satiate my carnivorous desires. A bit like solar electricity... It's taking over not because we want to save the world but because it's better and cheaper.

[ sorry this was a long one! ]
