@tchambers Thank you! The absolute bare minimum of any ethical construct around AI is per-user opt-in, and unfortunately many of the systems out there don't honor that at all. I'm glad you're taking this stance.
@tchambers@mjf_pro So far I suspect the fact that it's follow-only from fedi -> Threads is keeping things pretty chill. May be more of a challenge once there's engagement in the opposite direction.
"Reddit represents one of the largest data sets of just human beings talking about interesting things," Huffman said. "We are not in the business of giving that away for free."
You and me, we're just data sets. Years of interaction with fellow human beings, building community, sharing insight and creativity…it’s all just data. Data to be mined and monetized.
Huffman's not mad Reddit was scraped for a chatbot. He's mad he wasn't paid for the privilege. It's his data, you see. His. Not yours.
@peepstein@blaine@Gargron I don't agree with any of that. Mastodon is Mastodon. Everyone in the know, knows exactly what that is, and those who don't can be educated accordingly. I've already gone through this entire conversation with regard to the term "podcast" (no, it does not mean "any audio show on the internet"!)
It's really quite dangerous to repurpose technical terms to mean what they are not. HTML is not any markup, it's a very specific type of markup. Markdown is not Textile. etc.
@jamescridland I'll have to strongly disagree with your conclusions on this. Companies like Spotify do not get to redefine what the word "podcast" means any more than some random company can just decide what a "website" is.
And no, some audio show that's exclusively on YouTube or BBC or whatever is *not* a podcast.
The reason the public is confused is because (some) tech journalists aren't doing their damn job.
Mastodon founder and CEO Eugen Rochko tells Engadget: “Third party applications are incredibly valuable for a platform because that's where the power users go … it benefits everybody because the power users are the people who create the content that everybody reads.”
A hearty hello from #Portland & the Pacific Northwest! ? I'm a b/v+logger, podcaster, #Ruby & #WebDev-eloper, photographer, and musician.I work on @bridgetown, a Ruby web framework. I also talk about ethics in content creation and activism against unregulated generative AI. Nice to meet you!
