A friend of mine chews on licorice root sticks if I remember right and you want something designed for humans. I don't think you need to go as far as using a product designed for animals (and typically pet toys don't go through the same level of testing as those designed for use/consumption by humans). Added bonus is they look like like wooden sticks you could have picked up off the ground 😆

The correlation would better fit seed oil usage, I suspect. Can't remember where I saw it, but someone connected the rise in US obesity with the increased use of seed oils, especially at fast food places like McDonald's, who switched away from using lard to vegetable oil for their fries in the 90s.
