    • Not Just Bikes 🇳🇱

@notjustbikes So a big part of the context here is that this is after Tesla got authorization to roll out a fully-automated self-driving taxi service in Austin where, presumably, these cars will be driving themselves without anybody inside them to get to the passenger that hailed them.

In these tests they not only would've killed a child but also just continued on toward their destination.

@BrodieOnLinux I'm too out of the loop to know if fent is another window manager or just what people are calling fentanyl now.

@BrodieOnLinux whenever I watch any sort of PC gamer media I get the impression that there's a whole subset of PC owners who use their PCs ONLY for games and a web browser. And they'll blow like 2 grand on a rig for just that.

And for that subset Steam OS really COULD be a replacement.

A solid success. Found most of a cruiser in the trash on Tuesday. Rounded it off with a new seat, new fenders, new inner tubes, and a cargo rack that comfortably holds my panniers.

It's still far from perfect and it's clear that this bike has been treated like shit (I had to break out a ball-peen hammer to straighten and flatten the chain guard) but it should be for the moment a fairly solid around-town errand bike.

    @BrodieOnLinux oh good a recap.

I really did try to watch PDP's video because I wanted to know what he actually recommended - but it was my first PDP video and ... uh ... his style is not for me, we'll say.

@mattgrayyes would actually be nice if you could melt down your failed prints and reclaim the plastic, though.

@mcc I get the gag but I'm kinda chuckling at the notion of assembly being "one language."

@pluralistic I feel like the final point in that screenshot is the biggest "no duh" that immediately deflates privatization.

The government does X and it costs Y.
If a private company is going to do X and make a profit, it's going to cost the tax payers _at least_ Y + profit margin.

The only way it drives costs down is if the private company doesn't do the work.

@mcc I find it funny that modern computers (and tablets and phones) have all this GPU power and they end up with UIs that look like they were designed in Applesoft BASIC.

Hot #mastodon tip - if you see someone put up a post saying that they're looking for their people (like anybody trying to grow #blackmastodon, for example) and you're not who they're looking for - why not give a boost?

Maybe if enough people do it you can six-degrees-of-separation connect them to the community they're seeking.

@mwichary huh ... I've seen this font so many times on signs like these I always assumed it was made for an engraving machine specifically. Whenever I see it engraved in a slab of plastic like that I think of locker rooms and bowling alleys.

    • Mac84 ?

@mac84tv Yeah .. the ask for OS X software was specifically because the optical drive turned out to be dead so I couldn't install OS 9 from the restore discs.

I /did/ manage to get Classic Environment installed through NetBoot late last night, but installing bootable OS 9.2.2 to a second volume is going to have to wait for a bit.

    • Mac84 ?

TIL I don't have the following to crowdsource a question so throwing up an ask for a boost here to help out from @ActionRetro or @mac84tv

Got my daughter her first retro computer at the VCF Swap Meet - it's a silver-front G4 running Tiger. (It's old TO HER.)

Problem is I'm a lifelong PC user. I've only ever used OS X at work. So does anybody have any recs for OS X software that would be fun for a kid to explore?

@mcc Unfortunately the camera angles don't line up perfectly but, an attempt at a comp.

Mostly just an opportunity to learn a little bit more how to do stuff in GIMP that I used to do in Photoshop.

@mcc Lenovo just makes no sense to me at this point. This is the same page - the "Business" page. There's no real justification for trying to classify the Legion as a "Business Laptop" - keep scrolling and they have Chromebooks. Just totally disconnected from reality.

@mcc I'm late to this thread but this made me lol. I hate Lenovo's current naming. I wish they'd just stuck to dividing their laptops into customer groups (i.e. business laptops, home laptops, student laptops)

Looked out the window of my train in Baltimore and thought "hey that guy looks a little like @adamconover - no he looks A LOT like Adam Conover." Train over planes would be totally on-brand.
