Whether people left twitter because they wanted an alternative to twitter which does things somewhat differently by design, or because they wanted twitter as it used to be pre-Musk, seems like the deciding factor in whether they're willing to adapt to fediverse or just join a corporate twitter clone instead.

When the answers to those questions are so often: “Because we see it as a marketable resource” “wherever the people we sell it to decide to leave it” “whoever we sell it to and whoever they then sell it to and whoever can break their security” and “forever”, then there's a problem.

We really should be asking more “why do you need that info?” “where are you storing it?” “who has access to it?” “how long are you keeping it?” etc.

My 'extreme' 'nut' position is roughly equivalent to the data protection legislation passed decades ago by most western nations. This is settled practice for decades, that data collection and processing must be proportional and for a specific purpose. I'm not a wingnut here.

Contrarian men are all over the place saying “actually you DO need to give up your data to use the internet and posting on websites is actually exactly the same thing as corporations harvesting your data because you agreed to that in order to use their app and your instance admin is exactly the same as a corporation there is no difference so you should stop trying” and it's a wonder they can squeeze all those words out past the boot in their throat tbh

Apparently being somewhat concerned by the way corps harvest and sell data makes me a "privacy nut" or something.
Come on, I'm not exactly hiding in a bunker with a tinfoil hat so THEY can't read my brainthoughts, here. I'm just a person who thinks there actually IS an alternative way to handle stuff than having zero privacy ever for the sake of corporate interests. -

@goatsarah That sounds better than some, though I'm still loath to trust a corp like Apple.

Like, I don't buy that losing privacy has to be the only way to technologically track and analyse your own fitness data.

Is there an alternative fitness tracker solution that is better about data collection? I like the idea of tracking heart rate, steps taken etc, but I don't like what happens to that data once fitbit, samsung, or whoever get hold of it.

@AnarchoNinaWrites I do feel like those are basically people approaching the same point but from two different directions. Whatever it is, it's a cluster that I can work with.

People think ‘cis’ is a slur because that's how they think about and use ‘trans‘, as a slur.

The reason trans people are so specifically targeted for hate is not because of anything we've done. Thus we cannot stop this by changing our behaviour. The reason we're targeted is because ultraconservatives and cryptofash need an enemy, and we're one of a couple of easy one for them to target if they don't want to actually encounter significant opposition from liberals and the left, who will just sit there and allow it, defend their right to target us, or even join in.

I've said it before, and, because it's pride month, I'll say it again:
I don't get what horrible thing it is that some people see when they look at trans people, because all I see when I look at trans people is the most awesomely beautiful wonderful precious souls ever to be hosted in a human body. My theory is that bigots are just projecting their own vileness onto us when they look at us. -

Last thing I need is for someone to start quoting my posts, possibly out of context, and then I have a whole load of strangers being angry in my notifications. Had enough of that in the other place.
I don't even quite grasp what the use case for journalists is. Is it 'a famous person said some bullshit and here's my comment on it because I am a reporter and me doing that makes it A NEWS'? -

I like there not being quoting on here, it means I end up talking to people instead of quoting their post with a comment (so actually just talking to an audience that is not the OP), and I think talking to people is much better when it comes to understanding their POV.
If you have to add it, can I have an option to block it from happening (both for me being tempted to quote other peoples' posts and people trying to quote my posts)? -
