At some point today I'm gonna do a thread on when American Football (a sport that is more than 150 years old) instituted some of the same safety rules that exist in modern roller derby (a sport that is only 25 years old).
Partly because I find it fascinating, and partly because holy shit what is wrong with dudes
I'm rapidly approaching the point where I can read people's posts in basically any Western European language (except Dutch, sorry guys) without actually being able to speak any of those languages 🙃
I wish I could post pictures of the snow since it's very pretty but I'm a woman on the internet so posting public pics of where I live is right the fuck out.
I've found it so hard to find books I wanna read written in French that I've started buying translations of stuff I would have bought in English instead.
Fedi: does anyone here have recommendations for books in French by francophone authors (from anywhere) that fall into some subset of queer, cozy, and/or F/SF?
Not looking for serious horror, lit fic, or straight romance.
@vkc these things aren't even so much "jank" as they are the necessary and probably near-minimal amount of friction required to create multiple overlapping communities in the same[-ish] virtual space without total context collapse.
Things could be streamlined somewhat, but they can't be streamlined much more without losing the intimacy and ability to create real spaces for real people that these features afford.
Mastodon - even m.s - is cozy in a way other spaces aren't and can't be.
I hate that we no longer live in that brief window where we could share pictures of our lives online without having to worry that some freak will figure out exactly where we are *at that exact moment* and fuck with us.
One of the great things about Mastodon is if you need a computer to do something: - Seventeen people will just tell you to use Linux - Eleven people will recommend an app that won't run on your hardware - Six people will recommend something you have to build and/or host yourself - Three will recommend a service that costs $20/mo and does none of what you want - ... and one will have built EXACTLY the thing you need, ten years ago, because they had the same problem
