#Windows 3.1 included a red and yellow 'Hot Dog Stand' color scheme so garish it was long assumed to be a joke, so I tracked down Microsoft's original UI designer to get the true story

@governa @eniko I distinctly remember my mother using this theme — and distinctly remember people who weren’t yet computering in the 3.1 era later refusing to believe me that this was a stock official theme.

@tess @eniko @0xabad1dea @governa It wasn't that bright, but also, I think the inaccessibility is unequally distributed. Blue spectrum being difficult to focus is (mainly?) a consequence of chromatic aberration in corrective lenses. Presumably ppl with good vision don't have it so hard.

@eniko @0xabad1dea @governa least we forget, there was a whole era where state of the art presentation crafting involved the same color scheme.

You know - putting your important bullet points against a color the eye can't focus well, for something designed to be viewed in a dark room 🙃

@0xabad1dea @governa i wonder if they'd believe that before then lots of text editors had white text on retina-searing bright blue backgrounds

@steve @tess @eniko @0xabad1dea @governa That may also be true but it's so much worse with chromatic aberration. And the blue isn't actually the detail you need to see. If background is blue and foreground is white, all the detail is in non blue channels anyway.

@dalias @tess @eniko @0xabad1dea @governa is that actually true? S-cones are only like 2% of retinal photoreceptor cells and are mostly not foveated.
