Peter N. M. Hansteen (pitrh@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 31-Mar-2024 05:50:18 JST Peter N. M. Hansteen This is one of the best explanations of the xz matter I have seen so far:
https://lcamtuf.substack.com/p/technologist-vs-spy-the-xz-backdoorand it leads in with a quote to remember -
"This dependency existed not because of a deliberate design decisionby the developers of OpenSSH, but because of a kludge added by some Linux distributions to integrate the tool with the operating system’s newfangled orchestration service, systemd."
Enjoy!

Hansteen I just saw a post that referred to ChatGPT as "Mansplaining as a service", and it is so wonderfully correct - instant generation of superficially plausible yet totally fabricated nonsense presented with unflagging confidence, regardless of topic, without concern, regard, or even awareness of the expertise of its audience :D #chatgpt #mansplaining #GenerativeAiIsGoingGreat

Hansteen @feld @mms I suppose the wording in the Handbook https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/config/#configtuning-configfiles section 14.2.4 could be made less ambiguous then (the note vs the paragraphs following)

There has been parallel development ever since, so there will be differences. But I do not think any of them went as far as replacing the entire init system.

Peter N. M. Hansteen (pitrh@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 26-Nov-2023 01:44:31 JST Peter N. M. Hansteen @mms I'd say variations on a theme. FreeBSD and NetBSD both have the defaults in /etc/defaults/rc.conf and you edit /etc/rc.conf while OpenBSD has the defaults in /etc/rc.conf and you edit /etc/rc.conf.local, close enough that it's obvious they share a common origin.
