what's the scam behind unknown callers calling you and when you pick up, they hang up? -

@kaia To know if the line isn't a dupe. Then it sends that information to other system that will call you for real. kaia likes this. -

@kaia most probably war dialing to see who picks up and who doesn't so they can put your phone number into a list of possible targets

@kaia I would tend to think this due to incompetence rather than malice.
Likely inept robocall herders with bad timing. Which would be annoying, but likely harmless.

@kaia I hear somewhere that it's something like this:
https://www.ringover.com/parallel-dialer
they have an agent who calls a bunch of people at the same time. when someone answers, all the other people are just ignored

@kaia@brotka.st i think it's by law, spam calls have to have an operator on the line by a certain amount of seconds after the call is picked up, so if they don't have any call agents ready to sell you full life extended house insurance warranty or whatever, then they have to end the call. it is weird for sure, i don't know if this is true or not

@shibao I don't think unprompted spam calls are legal in EU / Germany in the first place :thinking_cirno: -

@kaia It may also be a prompt for you to call back. Either to forward the call to a pay-number or to have plausible deniability. A lot of legal protections don't apply, when you are technically the one calling them. kaia likes this. -

I suspect also they are hoping to leave a voicemail, which will likely be transcribed to text and generate at least two notifications. That phone manufacturers or carriers refuse to implement allowlisting for calls/voicemail is an insult and exposes their true customers
