@icedquinn Outside Nvidia, it really is pretty working desktop in 2024. At least with Plasma 6. Nvidia needs to get their open source drivers somehow to a reasonable state. I wish also now when they opened up their drivers, the effort with nouveau and nvk brings us a mainlined open stack, so you can just install any distro and wayland together with games will just work.

Until that, I’m sticking with AMD.

I was again reading a discussion of how evil #systemd is this morning. I guess it’s better than reading the mainstream news, but I’ve been using #linux since 1999 and systemd since Arch migrated to it, and it’s just really meh for me.

The same thing with #wayland, there’s no week without sometimes even heated discussion. I’ve been using a Wayland desktop since forever now, and it’s faster, leaner and works much better than X11 right now.

I think these heated discussions are a cycle we can’t be without in the OSS community.

@Lyude Yep, and when you use the software for working, being on the whims of a thousand product managers is not great. Something always changes for the worse in every version, and updating anything is really scary.

I still can’t understand how so many devs use macOS for their work in 2023. This is definitely changing now, people are starting to realize the same things that I did already in 2006, when after an upgrade I needed to give my credit card information to get the needed xcode package so I can continue to use the free compiler. One day was wasted there, and I was back to Linux.

@albituga_ @killyourfm I beg to differ. I have some SACD masters that sound better than anything. Also good old reel-to-reel tape beats any vinyl due to the better dynamics and missing the crackles.

@killyourfm Depends on the album. For example this one is never really gone to the red end, and even when the latest remaster is one point down compared to the vinyl, it sounds absolutely amazing from a SACD.

@killyourfm @system76 I just ordered the new ThinkPad T14s with AMD Ryzen 6850U for work. It is small enough, with a full day battery life, super quiet and fast. You can even order it with Ubuntu pre-installed and everything should work very well with Linux.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Yeah. It seems that people in the Apple world don't like choice that much and it is easier if there is one Fediverse server everyone uses.

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews I just tested a few other Android clients I haven’t yet tested:

    • Megalodon looks nice and works with Akkoma
    • Tooot works with Akkoma

I haven’t yet found any Android client that does not work with my instance. It’s a quite nice selection of apps already!

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Oh, and I’m actually using Tusky, which also works perfectly with Akkoma.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Why is it so hard to make good clients on iOS? Is it the libraries everybody use that make it hard for the devs to support other backends than Mastodon?

@atomicpoet @fediversenews How does the official client compare to apps like Husky, which also works very nicely with Akkoma/Pleroma. Actually, I haven’t found any Android Fediverse/Mastodon clients that do not work with Akkoma…

Here's my #introduction. I've been hacking and writing software (nowadays in #rustlang) for a few decades already. Very much into #Linux, #BSD and all things open source; #NixOS is my main driver for the past few years.

I've been collecting #music all my life, and I'm still following very carefully what gets released; snatching all good releases for a listen. I do not care about streaming services, and I prefer to build my own box with the files I own.

All things home #automation are like lego blocks: perfect relaxation and so much fun.

I guess my husband would say I'm quite #queer.
