@pluralistic@cryptadamist@oof Herbalife and other corporate MLMs had an actual term for this: being “garage-qualified” meaning that you spent part of your life savings buying the minimum stock to attain a certain level, and it sat unsold in your garage.
@johnefrancis@arstechnica The key thing about #Enshittification is that it happens, in part, because of the lack of discipline imposed by competition. So end consumers like us are often trapped with no alternative.
@johnefrancis@arstechnica Mine are both a bit older too. One is connected but the other is not, because it becomes almost non-functional when it is disconnected. I'm replacing my home routing setup with something a bit more sophisticated, and I'm going to see how well the router's ad-blocking DNS works on the TV.
It's such a shame that the Digital Milenium Copyright Act makes it nearly impossible for anyone to create an open-source TV OS to replace the bloatware TV manufacturers ship.
@pluralistic Maybe the collective action problem gets easier in small increments. Like intermittent fasting, but for toxic and #enshittified social media platforms.
I'm deleting all Meta platforms for at least a week. And I'm looking forward to the attention span I get back from just focusing on the Fediverse and real life.
I recently started using @npr 's mobile app again, and man...has it gone downhill. We've lost the straight local station streams, and instead we have to put up with a "local" stream with NPR-inserted targeted ads every few minutes. It's worse than commercial radio. Truly a case of @pluralistic's #enshittification in action.
NPR is a vital resource...it's tough to watch something this bad come out of the organization I rely on for so much. I'll stick to the regular airwaves for now.
