Hey you. Do you like low level programming? would you like to contribute to a large and well established project? Because I'm always looking to help new contributors getting started on GDB! It uses C++, but you may also end up needing to remove abstraction layers, so there's tons of things not-C++ to think about, if you want to.
I know that contributing to the GNU Debugger may sound like it's something that would be incredibly hard, or that you need ungodly amounts of knowledge to improve, because that's literally how I felt before sending my first patch, but the truth is, the project was developed by people (humans and otherwise), so silly bugs will abound, and simple oversights will need correcting. There is stuff for every level of programmer to do, from "I've worked on the kernel for 20 years" to "this is my 1st year in college and I'm not scared of large projects"
And here's the kicker, I want more contributors to the GDB project. So, if you are interested in this at all, you can hit me up and I will do my best to help you get setup to contribute (from compiling locally, to setting up git-send-email, running tests) and then help you understand the bugs, the code, and how to make a good commit message (to GDB's standards anyway). I've literally done code-walks with other mentees in the past, I eager to share as much of my experience as you would like to have! and I do my best to be ADHD/autistic friendly, since I'm AuDHD myself and would have really loved a mentor that did that for me in the past...
So... yeah, don't be afraid to reach out!

Crap
I woke up and my brain had the following exchange with me
:neofox: you know that conference you're going to later this year?
Yeah? :neofox_mug:
:neofox: you know that task you've been working on for a few months and it's not even halfway done already?
Yeah? :neofox_confused:
:neofox: what I'd you went to that conference to explain to ask the debugger, compiler and linker engineers about the problems and how you're solving them?
:neofox_glare:
:neofox_glasses:
I hate that I like this idea :neofox_glare: -

@mathaetaes@infosec.exchange @0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange The best advice for artistic projects I ever heard was to only do 80% of what you think it should be when perfect.
Reached 80%? done, ship it, next one. You'll finish 80% of your second project way before you would ever get close to 100% of the first, which will teach you a lot more in the long run
(Not to mention that every project will have a higher definition of what 80% means, so before you know it, you're shipping stuff that is 200% of your first project, and still considering it only 80% done) -

@cwebber@social.coop an addendum to splitting the party: it will be sad, but we live in the times where that will be the least impactful.
If you have signal, discord, threema, email, matrix, or anything else - especially if you can be mildly anonymous and it is decentralized - you can keep on touch. This won't be like flees prior, where you'll at best have letters and there's a high likelihood of never finding each other again.
With instant communication, the party can be reunited in the future, and you can still be part of each other's lives -

@hipsterelectron@circumstances.run yeah, I've been open about that before in the mailing list (just not the fork part, but I don't think that's a big leap anyway).
And yeah, copyright assignment is basically a regular legally binding contract where I'm transferring all the copyright of the code I own to the FSF, meaning they need a way to contact me in case of a court case... so full name, address and email IIRC (I never signed it, like I said, since company I work for does stuff in GDB, they needed to sign the disclaimer not me).
When this was brought up, the most fervent defender said you can use pseudonyms so long as you are known in the community, but the very next reply was "my application has been denied in the past for doing exactly that" so... yeah, PII required -

@hipsterelectron@circumstances.run How did I not see GBD, Gwen's Better Debugger???
Like, DB is much more used as database than debugger anyway, I always thought that part was silly
Welp, if I ever am no longer paid to work on GDB, I know what I'm doing lol (GDB still requires copyright assignment and no fucking way I'm sending that personal information to anyone in the US, much less the FSF) -

Me, to binutils developer: Hey, your stuff stopped building with clang, go fix
binutils dev: oh, that's a problem in clang, this code is correct and is checking XYZ
Me, to clang devs: Hey, I think your warning is incorrect because it is falsely flagging XYZ
Clang dev: oh no, it is correct, that code is actually relying on undefined behavior

@dalias@hachyderm.io @puppygirlhornypost2@transfem.social @varimbehphen@transfem.social the attacker can't add kernel level instrumentation to windows. they can have some extra stuff, but not the level that the BSOD's diagnostics would give them. If they could add that kind of instrumentation, that in itself would be a vector of attack. That level of knowledge on a machine you have user-level access would be DISASTROUS, think of all the scams where people contact "support" who remote in, they would be able to add that instrumentation (as part of the "anti virus run" or whatever) and get full visibility of kernel memory addresses, which is a gold mine for privilege escalation.
