Just for clarity #DoctorWho is canonically against #EthnicCleansing and would repurpose a hashtag for #Gaza without a second thought. Taking something frivolous and turning it into a tool to save lives is what #TheDoctor does. Read your own texts people.
@silvermoon82@soatok I hate to break it to you but 10/10 epidemiologists agree, even marketing people should get STI testing because *everybody* fucks, usually in more creative and interconnected ways than even the most lascivious of us have imagined. I would hate for a furry to get HIV from a marketer, sexual health has to be for everyone.
@inthehands while ai is causing new problems here I think this is also part of how we teach people how expertise and the social value of "smartness" works.
Sure people often need to rely on the expertise of others, but we should emphasize that it's an exercise in community and trust.... and usually we don't, schools present it as an exercise in authority... so yeah people go looking for something that produces authority for them.
@cwebber I wonder if those comments aren't missing your implied point (I think): in the context of an LLM there's no distinction* between science fiction stories and real data or realistic stories. These systems will happily suggest lock picking and casting knock as equal alternatives for opening a locked door.
*minor technical details about context window aside
@inthehands a narrow point: nothing says the national guard have to deploy with weapons. Plenty of what they do in emergencies doesn't involve carrying weapons. They are probably better off without weapons if they're stationed at schools. They would be there to exercise legitimate authority not state sanctioned violence.
@inthehands I do a fair bit of detailed spatial analysis on health equity and this is one thing that gives me pause. I've definitely considered dropping it and walking off because maybe the government shouldn't know more about where vulnerable people are.
@inthehands which really suggests the protests are an endurance game, the hard and unpleasant physical "no thank you" that's usually required to get those types to loose political support. I'm really not looking forward to it.
@inthehands I agree he's working on getting over the activation energy to fascism. Not very effectively necessarily but in the way that a stumbling bully and his posse usually do. It's schoolyard terror politics but on a continental scale.
I love this definition of a programming language from @inthehands
"HTML is a way for humans to express their ideas and their intentions in a form that is unambiguously interpreted by a machine. We express our ideas, then turn them loose. The machine's interpretation may diverge from our human understanding; when it does, our ideas talk back to us and they •surprise• us.
@inthehands I have gone through the exercise of trying to talk the chatgpt instance the university of Michigan makes available to its staff into terrible ethical positions and I gotta say it performed better (on, e.g.-Palestine) than a lot of the discourse in the mainstream news media so maybe there's some value to having a machine that produces average text... at least in the context of.. whatever we're experiencing right now...
