    @dbellingradt cool!

    search engines deteriorating makes finding old material on the web harder, but for those willing to dig deep: This looks like an inspiration to a functional user manual for a car where cutouts in the paper allowed users to flip directly to the relevant section. Back when VW spent money on such things, might even have been for the original Bully, if I remember correctly.

    @eaton I have a sociolinguistic jargon word at the tip of my tongue that I feel might be relevant in a US context: When learning a writing system requires learning a new standard variety or at the extreme, an L2. I remember examples from standard German (Switzerland) or Arabic.

    Is a similar distance to L1-variety a factor (e.g. via AAV and Spanish) and potentially exacerbated through the English spelling conventions (re: ghoti / fish) a US idiosyncracy in literacy?

    In there's-bound-to-be-a-German-word-for-it news, here's a very short one to describe the psychological pathology of living through the encompassing multi crisis:

    mütend, adj. - portmanteau of müde (tired) and wütend (irate).

    I think "tirate" works in English, no?

    @thomasfuchs The damage is real.

    As an aside: I would only ever caution to steer away from predicting concrete actions rather than behavioral trends that emerge from heightened propensities. It's just too easy to fall into just-so-stories with abductive reasoning from statistical observations.

    But hey, we're just dudes shitposting. It's not like we're obligated to meet communication standards of an international body of professional science communicators like, say, the WHO. Oh, wait...

    @thomasfuchs wasn't there a pretty well known correlation between voting conservative and toxoplasmosis?

    In fairness, as an alternative explanatory variable to changing risk aversion behavior, the confounding factor may simply be age: More infections as people grow older. But we do have pretty solid evidence for brain damaging pathogens and environmental factors having social consequences as a matter of principle. See leaded fuel and effects of living close to gas stations.

    (OMG, the replies...) Too many of y'all have not lived through the Baseballschlägerjahre and it shows.

    I have a different take on why Nazis are Nazis than Thomas, but the why is immaterial: To be a Nazi is absolutely a choice and it is one where they expect to benefit at the cost of others whom they view as less human. All you can do is change that calculus.

    I see the clout-chasing rephrasing or translating of popular posts without attribution has infiltrated my timeline. Yes, you all still get the benefit of the doubt, serendipitous accidents of timing niche content happens.

    Just remember: boosting people with interesting observations and ideas is what makes all of our timelines richer. And I for one would like to be pointed towards people who post cool shit, no matter their language.

    @feditips @x1l3f Thanks for your input on the notifications!

    The propagation question was not about visibility settings, but rather about the obscure server interactions regarding comment threads. I would go so far as describe the stark gap between naive expectation and reality as a bug, but I understand the underlying architecture constraints. Kind of.

    See https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18150 and linked issues. It's just unintuitive and not documented or explained in the UI (also not in your FAQ afaics?)

    @feditips given the implementation of ActivityPub on Mastodon, my current (limited) understanding is that there is no way to properly answer my question No. 2: A service would need to recursively query who is following whom for a given comment thread and what servers are thusly notified of comments to display them to their users.

    And going to the OP post on their server to view the comment thread is not common user behavior, hence we may encounter unwitting reply toxicity. Frustrating.

    Turns out I still don't know all the trappings of this here app.

    When I want to reply to a comment, but not burden the original post with even more reply-guy sidebars, does removing the @-mention of OP suffice or will my comment still trigger notifications?

    That is actually something I'd really like to know to inform my behavior.

    And an even more arcane question would be: where will the thusly directed comment propagate? What server and hence what audience will ever even see the reply?

    @grayface_ghost you are expressing my sentiment succinctly, thank you!

    My experience with finding expert guides on YouTube, however, has also gone down hill fast in the last few months. And I think their established pattern of monopolizing an avenue to knowledge only to "embrace, extend, extinguish" it away has not nearly brought the amount of scrutiny or disdain it deserves.

    We wrote scientific papers about YT-acceleration of cultural learning, for crying out loud!

    @thomasfuchs *all people. some are just more coherent in the internal consistency of the mental models they construct through critical reflection and some are more commensurable with what others can agree is grounded in a shared world experience.

    so let's mind our biases.

    edit: dammit, of course this has been thoroughly addressed in the mentions before.

    some people also happen to be pricks. it's when they willfully chose intellectual dishonesty I can no longer give benefit of the doubt.
