@skinnylatte No lie. I moved to Switzerland to study on a student visa at 18. Of my non-European foreign peers, perhaps 10% were able to remain there after their studies. The writing was on the wall from day one. Few made the voluntary choice to leave, like I did.
@skinnylatte The first year we had Luna, we spent in the low five figures on vet care. Ever since then I happily pay for my vet insurance, but I sometimes wonder what would happen if I couldn't afford it some reason. Scary.
I hope that its primary shareholder, the Proton Foundation, and its directors, Antonio Gambardella (Director at the Fondation Genevoise pour l’Innovation Technologique), Tim Berners-Lee, Dingchao Lu, and Carissa Véliz Perales exercise their fiduciary duty before Andy digs Proton into a hole. His simplistic political opinions actively harm the foundation's mission and statutory purpose.
Also worth noting that the Andy fellow doesn't even have full signing authority at Proton AG and cannot sign documents or agreements without a signature from another authorized signatory, so that's good. There's adequate oversight.
I'm disappointed to see @protonprivacy co-founder and CEO Andy Yen shortsightedly praising the incoming US administration for “standing up for the little guys”.
That said, I am glad that Proton AG's primary shareholder is now a Swiss non-profit foundation, which means the Swiss Confederation and Geneva can intervene if the foundation improperly moves away from its statutory purpose.
TL;DR: Proton CEO may be shortsighted, but the structure of Proton gives me hope that the Geneva and Swiss confederation can intervene if he decides to go full Musk.
Tacos are my camping food. I've made and happily eaten hundreds of tacos out in the forest and desert. Never once have I made a tortilla from dehydrated masa. I will get ready-made tortillas and keep them in the cooler until I'm ready to eat them.
TL;DR: Don't bother making tortillas using a tortillas press when camping. It's not authentic, it's not as good and it is more work.
And "AI" will not change this truth, because these systems *still* need to be trained and that training still requires badly-paid people to be exposed to terrible, traumatic content.
So when people go and sing the praises of corporate social networks and how their "trust and safety" policies are protecting users, I hope they spare a second to think about the individuals doing the actual moderation.
If your experience online is mostly free from racism, abuse, and other forms of violent or extreme content, there's a good chance that it's because someone, somewhere, filtered it out for you.
@kingrat The building he pimped women out from is around the corner from my place. It's either the Harrison or 399 Fremont. My bet is on the later, given its reviews:
Imagine working in tech, in some customer facing capacity and having to see this a dozen times a day, knowing your boss is seeing it too and probably running the numbers.
And I'm not talking about "deplatforming", removing posts, or shadow bans. I'm taking about identifying the family of DACA recipients, finding people organizing protests or sending abortion medication to friends.
