earlier this year I did my bills / budget to see how much vet care for cookie cost in 2025 (the last year of her life) and it was so large and scary that it has been an effective prevention against the idea of getting any new pets

@skinnylatte The first year we had Luna, we spent in the low five figures on vet care. Ever since then I happily pay for my vet insurance, but I sometimes wonder what would happen if I couldn't afford it some reason. Scary. -

@skinnylatte We have health insurance for both of our dogs through Trupanion. Cheap for the younger pup because we bought the policy early in her life; pricier for the older dog because she was three when we adopted her. But now, the older dog is 11 and needs two echocardiograms a year; with the insurance, we only end up paying for one of them.

@skinnylatte Maybe foster? Rabbit rescues are always in need of volunteers to foster, and they typically cover the vet bills.

@skinnylatte seconding foster if you think you can handle it emotionally. some organizations will even cover the cost of food, and every org i've seen around here covers vet bills.

@gglockner I had very good pet insurance and I definitely got back way more than I paid. Depends on location I guess.
Every time we went to an ER it was 8-10K

@skinnylatte Did you have pet insurance? If so, was it cost-effective? For our last 2 dogs, the cost of insurance would have been much more than the cost of vet bills, even including expensive treatments near end-of-life.
