The Elno death spiral got me thinking about a #Twitter project from 2010, when I decided that @robcottingham and I should win "best couple" in the Shorty (Twitter) Awards as a write-in category.

I built an entire website to aggregate our mutual tweets via #RSS, back when Twitter still had real RSS support. (The slow death of Twitter RSS was the beginning of the end.)

It's delightful to work towards a #mastodon #coop for #Canada with @evan and other lovely folks. Thoughts so far:

The #Twitter #migration creates a sense of urgency. But that rush is at odds with creating safety, a broad leadership team, real accountability structures...all the things that might actually make for a healthy community.

We've seen plenty of fast-start sites. It's hard but powerful to slow down & create conditions for lasting success & inclusion.

@SmallTownGirl actually I think we've got plenty of folks with the tech chops. What we need are folks to help with outreach, community building/management, moderation policy, user guidelines etc. Perhaps of interest??

The revelation that #hashtags don't necessarily travel reliably between instances and servers is a bit concerning.

What if there is a lively conversation somewhere about #Excel and #GoogleSheets #formulas and I'm just missing it all!!???

@jennyrae yeah, this was kind of an accidental discovery as a result of #cosocialca -- I was pointing people to the tag and hearing from friends on other instances that they got no results, or saw the "3 people using this hashtag" result but then couldn't click through to see the posts.

I definitely miss the data/insights of the old place but the power of that data is inseparable from the risks and pathologies of a global platform.

@evan @cosocial hey it's magic! This is my first masto group experience. So basically....a group is a username that works kind of like an email exploder?

@jdp23 @evan Such a thoughtful note. We need to be explicit that the goal here is to convene a founding board. Most folks involved seem keen to step back into supporting (& hardworking!) roles -- but I think @natematias is spot-on about the value of seeing where we can lend support/resources to initiatives already underway instead of setting wheels in motion and then asking others to step in/up.

and also: Evan (& others) have resources that could be really useful if leveraged!

I'm excited about the folks who are pitching in to develop the #cosocialca vision for a Canadian-based Mastodon #coop. But gosh it's a pretty white (anglo, bro-forward) group so far, and we're well aware that is NOT who needs to be at the table.

Right now the #cosocialca tag makes this conversation look even narrower than it is, so I hope more folks will start using the hashtag and/or reaching out (here, or on cosocial.ca) to get involved. I'm reaching out too!

@evan I am 99% sure this is my situation but searching email for “mastodon” didn’t help. problem a: not 100% sure my various email migrations and consolidations included things like registration confirmations. problem b: if I signed up with an instance that doesn’t have “mastodon” in URL, maybe confirmation wouldn’t include that word? #brainwave going to search for “fediverse” too.

and also: If I *did* find that old acct I might be able to *look* like an OG but I’d be faking.
