So, let's say you have a friend who registered a Mastodon account "somewhere" a few years ago. How would you help them find it?

Evan Prodromou (evan@prodromou.pub)'s status on Thursday, 17-Nov-2022 00:34:58 JST Evan Prodromou So far, I've just been going to mastodon.social and trying their Twitter handle there. I should probably try other nodes, too.

grin (grin@mastodon.grin.hu)'s status on Thursday, 17-Nov-2022 00:36:32 JST grin @evan depends on the available data. ?
If have been followed by someone then the messages may be searchable on that server, if there's something to search for.
Since actor API is open it may also be feasible to look up @"username"@every_instance ;-) and it isn't really stressing on the servers since it's just one call per server. Of course that requires a known username. -

AlexandraSamuel.com???? (awsamuel@social.coop)'s status on Thursday, 17-Nov-2022 03:41:54 JST AlexandraSamuel.com???? @evan I am 99% sure this is my situation but searching email for “mastodon” didn’t help. problem a: not 100% sure my various email migrations and consolidations included things like registration confirmations. problem b: if I signed up with an instance that doesn’t have “mastodon” in URL, maybe confirmation wouldn’t include that word? #brainwave going to search for “fediverse” too.
and also: If I *did* find that old acct I might be able to *look* like an OG but I’d be faking.

Per Axbom (axbom@social.xbm.se)'s status on Thursday, 17-Nov-2022 04:04:54 JST Per Axbom @evan This is what my confirmation email looked like in 2017. I gather this is the default email template from back then.
In my case I found the email but the instance doesn't exist anymore ?
