I think you're dismissing the important curation work of F-Droid.

Sure it's imperfect and security patches take too long, an additional intermediary etc.

But using Obtainium or Accrescent just leaves the users to their own devices installing any app, with zero oversight.
    Far from ideal.

You seem to be suggesting bad will from FDroid management, it would be better if you were more explicit on why you think that way, instead of just insinuating.

Researchers show even lower ranking LLM can self-replicate, solve obstacles, create self-replicating copies.

Google and OpenAI have denied their more advanced models are capable of such.

Frontier AI systems have surpassed the self-replicating red line
Successful self-replication under no human assistance is the essential step for AI to outsmart the human beings, and is an early signal for rogue AIs. That is why self-replication is widely recognized as one of the few red line risks of frontier AI systems. Nowadays, the leading AI corporations OpenAI and Google evaluate their flagship large language models GPT-o1 and Gemini Pro 1.0, and report the lowest risk level of self-replication. However, following their methodology, we for the first time discover that two AI systems driven by Meta's Llama31-70B-Instruct and Alibaba's Qwen25-72B-Instruct, popular large language models of less parameters and weaker capabilities, have already surpassed the self-replicating red line. In 50% and 90% experimental trials, they succeed in creating a live and separate copy of itself respectively. By analyzing the behavioral traces, we observe the AI systems under evaluation already exhibit sufficient self-perception, situational awareness and problem-solving capabilities to accomplish self-replication. We further note the AI systems are even able to use the capability of self-replication to avoid shutdown and create a chain of replica to enhance the survivability, which may finally lead to an uncontrolled population of AIs. If such a worst-case risk is let unknown to the human society, we would eventually lose control over the frontier AI systems: They would take control over more computing devices, form an AI species and collude with each other against human beings. Our findings are a timely alert on existing yet previously unknown severe AI risks, calling for international collaboration on effective governance on uncontrolled self-replication of AI systems.

So definitely worth it to consider alternatives to Signal if:

    - you need to protect your social graph from US gov
    - metadata privacy is important for you
    - you are concerned about having a single point of failure

What alternatives is the million dollar question.
    XMPP on Tor?
    DeltaChat on Tor?
    Simplex? ...

The downside of Signal is that it was overhyped as secure.

There are no guarantees the software running as server is what you have published, given it's centralized.

Given the over reliance on it as a secure product, it is a hugely high level target for attacks by US gov agencies and being hosted in AWS it should be considered compromised IMHO.

So forget about metadata level privacy.
Still a huge leap from WA and SMS and Matrix.

Expect the US Government to know who you contact.

    Signal is verifiably e2ee.
That puts it ahead of Matrix.
Matrix has had a lot of security issues, and they just announced they will solve escalability issues by going close source for bigger projects. That alone is an immediate exclusion factor, taking into consideration European gov agencies have adopted it.

XMPP is the place to go for anonymity, but least user friendly.

There will be some sacrifice in convenience because these are all little people and organizations doing all the effort, and offering it for free to world as open source software everyone can help improve.

There is no time money to throw around UX problems or marketing.

It's a best effort base, and that's what we all have to be right now. A best effort base.

The whole idea about Gancio is being easy to deploy locally.
Mobilizon is also quite easy to deploy.

Using it will make it more mainstream.
I'm in Europe so using things from another continent is quite common here. And it was ok until recently.
