I think you're dismissing the important curation work of F-Droid.
Sure it's imperfect and security patches take too long, an additional intermediary etc.
But using Obtainium or Accrescent just leaves the users to their own devices installing any app, with zero oversight. Far from ideal.
You seem to be suggesting bad will from FDroid management, it would be better if you were more explicit on why you think that way, instead of just insinuating.

The downside of Signal is that it was overhyped as secure.
There are no guarantees the software running as server is what you have published, given it's centralized.
Given the over reliance on it as a secure product, it is a hugely high level target for attacks by US gov agencies and being hosted in AWS it should be considered compromised IMHO.
So forget about metadata level privacy. Still a huge leap from WA and SMS and Matrix.
Signal is verifiably e2ee. That puts it ahead of Matrix. Matrix has had a lot of security issues, and they just announced they will solve escalability issues by going close source for bigger projects. That alone is an immediate exclusion factor, taking into consideration European gov agencies have adopted it.
XMPP is the place to go for anonymity, but least user friendly.
There will be some sacrifice in convenience because these are all little people and organizations doing all the effort, and offering it for free to world as open source software everyone can help improve.
There is no time money to throw around UX problems or marketing.
It's a best effort base, and that's what we all have to be right now. A best effort base.
Hi I'm a pessimist too, you can always try to scream louder, maybe it helps who knows? I'm just more optimistic about actual movements, beyond TikTok trends.
