Just had a wild tech support experience with @InnosearchAI , who run an online shopping platform made to be accessible for blind users. I wrote them with an issue I was having using the site with my screen reader, and they wrote back saying let's schedule a Zoom call so you can show us what's happening, and we'll give you $50 in credit on your account. And then that actually happened. The people on the call were very nice, and I sort of just don't know how to react to a tech company actually valuing my feedback as a screen reader user. Like valuing it with money. #blind#accessibility
Blind #parenting moment. 2YO is starting to understand I'm #blind. Last night she bit a piece of salami into a shape she said looked like a shell. She told my mom, who was on a video call, to “look.” Then she held the salami out and said, “Daddy, feel it.” This was touching, though it created a dilemma. I wanted to encourage her for understanding something new. But I did not want to “feel” a piece of salami a toddler was eating. Ended up just holding it for a brief second. Parenting decisions…
@Fragarach@floppyplopper@Fragglemuppet Oh I mean I’m no expert, but most of my experience has been figuring things out one platform or app at a time. I’m on mastodon because it’s the most accessible option . at the moment The app I use on my phone is Mona, and this was the blind demo that got me into it: https://www.livingblindfully.com/lb0227transcript/
Being #blind is fun. Just encountered a visual captcha with no audio option. So I used JAWS Picture Smart to get AI to read me the text of the visual clue, which I typed in and got through. So basically I'm a human who needs a robot to prove to another robot that I am not a robot. Without my robot, the other robot would have thought I was a robot. Also I was trying to make a payment on my PAP machine, which really should in itself indicate that I am not a robot. #Disability#Disabled
My 2 YO just gave me a big hug, pointed at her stomach, and very sweetly, like she was telling me she loved me, said “Daddy, you my belly button.” Confused, I said “I’m your belly button?” She nodded, said “mmhmm,” and walked away. Still trying to wrap my head around this interaction.
I podcast, write, and edit books and articles on Christianity, politics, disability, and all sorts of justice issues. I try to be both kind and uncompromising, and to prioritize marginalized perspectives. I'm proudly blind and less proudly an ex - lawyer. Will occasionally post on baseball, nerd things, and funny stuff my kid does. He/him.
