King George the Fifth - whose titles included #emperorofindia - received #mahatmagandhi in #buckinghampalace some time in the 1930s when the latter was in #london at a round table conference over the future of #india . #gandhi wore a #dhoti albeit a clean one on that occasion . The King appears to have accepted his guest's attire with equanimity. When #gandhi was criticised afterwards about his skimpy attire he remarked that his host had worn enough clothing for the two of them!

(equivalent to #episcopalian in #us and #scotland ) clergy for speaking up about inhumane government policies were used by the authorities in #southafrica and what is now #Namíbia during the final decades of #apartheid . Most famous case #Colinwinter who was #Bishop of #Damaraland .

There were informal pressures to prevent #greece and #turkiye going to war with each other - as they came close to at times in the 1960s and 1970s. these worked - in part because the #us was behind the policy and also because the two had a very rough military parity. I do not think there was an actual clause. The last country to attack an ally while still in formal alliance with it was #germany attacking #hungary in the summer of 1944 .

This is an interesting and perceptive article but I am not sure I agree entirely with it. The time to discuss the wider issues will be after the judicial proceedings against the rioters and thus who incited them have concluded; otherwise it could be seen to prejudice them. There been some subtle changes already in the narrative - the inaccurate and pejorative adjective 'illegal' when referring to migration has been replaced in official statements by the neutral term 'irregular'.
