So this morning, I'm on the phone to a family member and we're talking about women and said family member says that most women would prefer men to propose. I said, yes, but they're victims of the system they live under and that that's just patriarchy doing what it does. He asks how and I explain that the system doesn't like strong women who lead and that back in the day, women would often lead, it's only now that this has been suppressed and then I mention how I'm a proponent of female led relationships. So this obviously opened the door to questioning my sexuality. There was some back and forth and I mention how women that don't fit the western beauty standards often how their gender questioned, which only reinforced the point I'm trying to make about the suppression of women. You must look and act a certain way to be a woman and if you don't do that, you're perhaps not a woman or perhaps he's not a real man. So I say how I'm an advocate for equality and trans rights and how things targeting trans people often affect unrelated men and women. I mentioned how men lost shooting in the Olympics back in the day and then introduced gender segregation. Then it got into an argument about trans with me advocating for segregation based on weight and skill rather than gender. He disagreed saying it's unfair. I gave the example that for javelin, if someone is 9 stone and throws an average of 50 metres they should compete against other people that are 9 stone that throw an average of 50 metres. No. So I explain that this is just prejudice. Then came the doozy. If their young daughter was going to the toilet and a "trans man" went into the toilet, if I didn't intervene, then I shouldn't be trusted around his child. I ask why trans women can't use the toilet too? He says just to be safe, some people pretend to be trans so they can molest. I ask would you act the same if it was a Catholic priest? I say that I would either stop everyone or no one, but I'm not stopping someone just because they're trans. Then it was back to questioning my sexuality. Fuck man, I'm tired. WTF is wrong with people?
@dansup@benroyce@pixelfed@Gargron what is the relevance of the PixelFed promotion here? It feels shoehorned in and really crassly so. Okay, you came back and built an app… so?
Gargron was happy for you and tooted about it but what's that gotta do with Mastodon.Social? Does it change the fact that the MS moderation is poor?
A pat on the back hardly is enough to make you a cheerleader. Especially given that when Gargron wanted to host his personal gallery he didn't opt for PixelFed so that pat on the back didn't really mean too much other than lip service.
Anyone with any semblance of impartiality will say that Gargron has done some good things and there's lots he could and should do better, especially in regards to safeguarding his users and supporting the wider Fediverse.
But I'm still at a loss as to how this relates to the incredibly dodgy PixelFed plug.
So yesterday I was baffled because all the images on my #ETR timeline stopped showing. I tried to blame Moshidon but when I checked in the browser still nothing. So I disabled the NextDNS and they came back, but not in the browser, uBlock was doing its job. Turns out one of the filters added exoio to the blocklist. Anyway, removed that and we're good to go. But heads up for anyone else with the problem.
I don't think people realise just how shit their phone keyboards are. For years I was using #MinuumKeyboard and it was a great experience. I didn't have to type precisely because the algorithm would use press position and the previous word to guess what I was trying to type.
Now I'm using #GBoard and it's stupid as hell. There's nothing smart about it. No #MachineLearning nothing. I know there's zealots that hate the idea of #AI and by extension #ML. But bear in mind, all #Minuum machine learning was done on-device.
Typing is so laborious now. It's slow and painful and I'm constantly forced to do what should be the job of the processor.
Honestly, keyboards were supposed to be the next frontier is tech warring but unfortunately the big bastards shut everyone else. I still lament the fact that #Mozilla didn't even have the balls or foresight to give it a go. Imagine a well supported #OpenSource#keyboard that could sync your dictionary to your other devices via your own #selfhosted server. Instead #Google gave us GBoard which doesn't even try and #Microsoft have #SwiftKey which stopped trying when they bought it. Both are super happy to farm their users for #LLM data though.
How far away am I from being fluent in German? I just had a micro daydream where I was in a group chat with @GreenSkyOverMe and my first word was "Glockenspiel" 🫠
Do you know something I find really jarring about #Mastodon apps? Why is the media tab on profiles a timeline? I just wanna see an overview of pictures/videos. I have never once pressed that tab and thought, yay something to scroll through. It's a weird standard practice that makes no sense. Even on #Moshidon.
If anyone asks me about the #Fediverse, the first port of call will always be to find a good instance. Whether #Mastodon or #Lemmy or others. Having an instance admin that gives a shit is pivotal to your experience.
I'm not in the weeds of high tension discussions most of the time and so miss out on most of the trolls trolling. The only malicious racism I've faced was in one of the black mastodon groups. But being on here without a good admin is like being in a house during a storm without a roof.
Should people have to think about what their admin is like before they choose their instance? Honestly, yes. If we want a new type of Internet, we need to learn how to make educated decisions.
That doesn't mean that there's not problems with racists, bigots and trolls and that it's not a community problem. But I know that everyone that has moved house has checked out their new home first and made sure it had a roof.
Let me say this and let me say this clearly. If a platform is coding in allowances for #antiblack verbage, that's a terrible platform. There's no ifs, buts or maybes.
Trying to then recreate the same circumstances here that allow for that is senseless. If you want to empower minorities on #mastodon, you need to create communities elsewhere. Centralising on a single instance is shooting yourself in the foot.
If you want social media equality… If you want social media progression… If you want to overthrow the system… If you aren't in the one percent… If you are different… If you are the same… If you are fighting… If you are an ally… …GET THE FUCK OFF THE HUGE INSTANCES AND ERODE THAT POWER!
