    • Linux Matters Podcast

A Bitcoin investor was recently scammed out of 9 Bitcoin (worth around $490K) in a fake “Exodus wallet” desktop application for Linux, published in the Canonical Snap Store. This isn’t the first time; if nothing changes, it likely won’t be the last.

This is a rather long blog post to accompany @linuxmatters episode 23.

@niccolove @simon Still giving him the oxygen of publicity. As someone who is very aware of his constant grifts, public anti-trans behaviour and other problematic issues, this is completely unwise on your behalf.

In my experience, so far at #fosdem it’s been the Apple laptops which have projector issues and #Linux ones seem fine. How the turns have tabled!

One thing USA has that we don't in the UK, is 'thrift stores' with decent selections of electronics.
Here, every high street has a bunch of charity shops, which are mostly full of clothes, china, books and DVDs.
Every "thrifting" YouTube video I see from retro gamers in the US, has tons of options. Way more than we do in the UK.

Hey, Matrix users! What's the magic incantation to make this popup stop appearing? I verified with another device, but this won't go away. I'm using Element in a browser tab.

@freedosproject GWBASIC in ROM on an IBM PC. When at college we learned to code on IBM XT class computers with twin floppy drives. We would often arrive before the lecturer, who held onto the class floppy disks. I would boot to GWBASIC and fiddle around making fun little demos. They'd all be immediately lost when the power was cut. Booting to a programming language in ROM is the epitome of "finished' software.

@cwebber federation: Lots of distributed data rather than one centralised hub containing all the accounts and data.
activitypub: the message protocol used between federated servers - like mastodon, and soon threads. (maybe)

I'm completely sick of saying (and hearing) Chat-gee-pee-tee said out loud in conversation.

    I have a solution 💡

We have prior art for modern abbreviations:

👑 Platty Jubes - Platinum Jubilee
📉 Cozzie Livs - Cost of Living crisis
🗳️ Genny Lex - General Election

So I propose Chatty Jeeps for ChatGPT 💬

Going forward, I will be using this, and actively, pedantically, correcting people.

"Uh, I think you mean Chatty Jeeps 💅"
    #ChattyJeeps

@mjg59 I switched from rsnapshot (rsync in trenchcoats) to Borg. Loving it. I do hourly backups which take a few mins on each machine, to a central backup server over an encrypted connection. WFM YMMV

CAPS LOCK BEHAVIOUR DISABLED IN GNOME
SOMETIMES I PRESS THE CAPS LOCK KEY BY ACCIDENT, USUALLY WHILE PLAYING A VIDEO GAME. I THEN FIND MYSELF UNABLE TO TYPE A PASSWORD OR I AM ACCUSED OF SHOUTING ONLINE. OVER COFFEE, MY FRIEND MARTIN EXPLAINED THAT IT’S POSSIBLE TO DISABLE THE CAPS LOCK KEY COMPLETELY IN LINUX. I’D NEVER CONSIDERED DOING THIS, MISTAKENLY THINKING THE ONLY OPTIONS WERE TO REMAP IT TO SOMETHING ELSE. IT TURNS OUT GNOME TWEAKS HAS AN OPTION.

    🚨 FRIDAY QUIZ TIME 🚨
I have just provisioned a new dedicated #Linux server. It's been deployed running #Ubuntu 22.04.3. I SSH'ed in as root, given the provided credentials. 🤓
QUESTION: What's the very first command I typed after logging in? 🤔
