#IndigeousMastodon#Native GatheringOfNations #Indigenous#Powwow#BlackMastodon The powwow took place at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque NM. The first photo is at the beginning of the Grand Entry. It opened with a dancer holding the eagle staff. Behind him are the war bonnets, then the outgoing Miss Indian World, and the head man and woman dancers. The coliseum floor is empty at this time. 2/5
The grand entry took 20 minutes! As they approached the end, there were so many dancers that the floor of the coliseum could no longer be seen. This was the first day and the drummers/singers were in competition. They were lined up on the two sides. On the second day the drummers were in the middle and by the time the dancers entered, they could no longer be seen. This photo is from day 1 at the end of entry. 3/5
#IndigeousMastodon#Native GatheringOfNations #Indigenous#Powwow#BlackMastodon People are generally familiar, I think, with powwow dances: men northern and southern traditional, women northern and southern traditional, men grass dance, men fancy dance, women jingle, women shawl, women fancy shawl, women northern and southern traditional, women buckskin and men chicken dance. I caught a good clip of the women's fancy shawl and they were so beautiful. 4/5
#IndigeousMastodon#NatiIve GatheringOfNations #Indigenous#Powwow#BlackMastodon In our region the powwows are small compared to the massive event in NM. We don't have enough women to have a separate buckskin competition, much less a Northern and Southern style one. Here's a clip of the women's northern buckskin competition. Look at the movement of the fringe on their regalia. These women are highly skilled because they all seemed to keep that fringe moving effortlessly. 5/5
#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter Thanks to everyone who followed me over to the new server and to all new people. For the new people: I post mainly about matters relevant to communities of color, particularly Black folks. I post about abolition, what it is and why it’s needed. I post on African music and cultural events in the DC/NY corridor. I’m a lawyer and retired law prof. I do pay attention to notable trials. I don’t do free lifting for white folks who can look up things on the internet.
#IndigeousMastodon#Native GatheringOfNations #Indigenous#Powwow Some cleansing for the time lines today. Went to #GatheringOfNations Powwow over the weekend. I've been attending powwows for nearly my entire life and this weekend was unlike anything I've ever experienced. The energy of the dancers and drummer/singers was amazing. And it was so clear this was an event for folks to celebrate each other. Visitors were welcome but it was not about them. Sharing 2 videos and 2 pics below. 1/5
#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter#WashingtonDC#HomeRule You may know DC is not a state. We pay taxes but don't have a voting member in either the House or the Senate. We have what is called "Home Rule." It allows us to elect local government and to have local laws. The Republicans have introduced a bill that would eliminate Home Rule. If you live in the district please follow the FREE DC Project. https://freedcproject.org/ Project orientation starting this week. Don't let them make DC a plantation.
#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter # Abolition #MutualAid It’s been a while since I shared an abolition post, but it seems appropriate to post something about #MutualAid during these times. I’m going to guess that some of your communities may need to think more seriously about how to organize mutual aid for your communities. Mutual Aid is a part of the abolition framework. Stabilizing our communities is a way to help them stay safe without the use of police. A short thread ...1/4
#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter#Abolition This is my last #Abolition post until after the election cycle dies down or the country implodes. In this thread I‘ll deal with the struggle folks who are trying to create safety for communities face when municipal governments claim they want to see change, but then work actively to prevent change. All communities want to be safe, but the default model is using the police for security versus building safety within the community. 1/8
#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter#JamesBaldwin100#MeshellNedegeocello#music Forgot to say in my earlier post there were two things the artist said during the poetry reading part. She quoted Audre Lorde who said: ”There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives." Second thing: Everyone is down for the struggle...until it begins." BOOM! Naked truth. Nedegeocello is always a truth teller for our times. 2/2
@mekkaokereke My brother, who lives in Orlando, which may see the next wave of Milton , told us that people who left from Tampa at 6am this morning just started arriving in Orlando, (normally a 90 min ride) at 1;30 pm this afternoon. The window on when to leave is rapidly closing. I also heard the state is running shuttles to help people get to shelters. Hope people pay attention and secure themselves. Edit: punctuation
@inthehands@StillIRise1963@Brad_Rosenheim There is some evidence that students who excel a the top of their classes in neighborhood schools do struggle in college courses. There was a sad article in the WaPost some years ago by one of DC's leading Black HS students who talked about how under prepared he was when he got to college. But we were also seeing people coming out of top elite colleges who could not write. An MIT prof said they can write one well composed sentence but not a paragraph.
@GottaLaff Colorado is one of the states that the Bill Picket Rodeo performs in. Aurora placed the most beautiful ad in their program guide. "Discover the world in a city right here in Aurora! " The ad then goes on to take pride in the fact its the most diverse city in the state and over 120 languages are spoken there. That is the world we want, not the dystopian crap others are selling.
@GottaLaff I'm torn on the issue because they've been spewing it for ages, just quietly against marginalized people. Now everyone sees it. It's upsetting but I think the bandaid had to be pulled off for the majority of Americans to see our country as it really is. Perhaps the 2024 election results will cause them to go back underground, but no matter what, they will not disappear. History tells us that.
#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter#uncommitted#politics#2024Election I apologize in advance for the length of this thread, but the 3rd party voter issue is nagging at me. I support #uncommitted and others for fighting to bring the issue of the genocide against the Palestinians to the forefront. I totally support the activists who are fighting to save Palestinian lives. I’ve even attended some of the protests here in DC. 1/11
@darnell I strongly recommend you read the briefs that were filed with the International Court of Justice so that you can educate yourself on what is happening in that region.
@darnell Hezbollah was not involved in the Oct 7th attack. Don't conflate the two organizations. They are different, they have different functions and agendas. Peace can be achieved in the region if Israel goes back to the 2 state solution that was proposed before it assassinated Rabin for agreeing to the Oslo Accords. Peace is achievable without ongoing slaughtering of innocent civilians which is a war crime and crime against humanity.
