i remember as a kid hearing about how insanely kitschy and wonderful 1976 was in terms of 200 years of America celebrations and being sad that I missed it yet I was also looking forward to the 250th because that’s the one I’d get to witness and…well…shit.

i generally don’t doomer on main but, seriously, wtf has happened to it all? it’s always been far from perfect but that was also the promise -> building towards something that could be.

now what is it? get a life sentence for running a zine club? get arrested for looking at a disgusting, rotten pool? having your hard earned (and natural) rights, freedom, medical care taken away out of hate.

i see lots of tributes to the 250th that have the years 1776-2026 and i stopped reading them as a celebration of an experiment in freedom. they’re not a celebration. they’re a listing of its birth and a death.

walking to work i pass a gas station - this morning gas was $4.59 and this afternoon on my way home it was $4.99.

i just got done dealing with them there and now everything is squared away with me owing $0 for the secret third line that i never asked for or wanted or used - that they wouldn't cancel.

i assume this is one of those dark pattern type things where if you go through the normal system like normal people would they just screw you over but if you're on social media then you're a semi-threat for being able to cause a public stink and therefore they settle things.
