@thomasfuchs Historically, those backslides always seem to happen when there's a concentration of wealth and power. Suddenly there's not enough to go around and people start looking for outlets for their frustration. That's when grifters come along and exploit their weakness.

@thomasfuchs It's because normal users want cross-platform apps but the C/C++ devs, who should have been building cross platform libraries, were too busy scoffing at web apps and whining about how much RAM Chrome used.
So a JS dev built Electron and did their job for them. But at least they get to whine about how much RAM electron apps use.

@thomasfuchs Maybe this _is_ AGI and it turns out it's just as dumb as some people are.

@thomasfuchs It's a metaphor for every time the private sector takes over a public sector service.

@thomasfuchs I don't miss rotary phones; those were like if someone made a parody of tactile UI.

@thomasfuchs Not to mention it positions it self as a "privacy focused" browser and yet it was caught injecting affiliate links into URLs.
Their TOR implementation leaked DNS queries effectively making it pointless.
They collected cryptocurrency donations (BAT payments) using a system that looked like people were donating to youtube creators like Tom Scott.
And more...

@thomasfuchs What's strange is that Yahtzee Croshaw (Zero Punctuation) narrates his own audio books, but I don't always get the impression the voices he chooses for the characters actually fit.
That said, his books are pretty fun.

@thomasfuchs Yeah, definitely not an ad. This is one of those filler articles that publications always had ready if they needed to fill space. "Ten things you can do with your new CDROM drive", "Tips and tricks to get the most out of your SoundBlaster", etc.
What kind of ad would say "Reward them with a visit"? LOL!

@thomasfuchs I mean, it takes a super computer's worth of patience to deal with archaic measurement systems like lbs and ounces.

@thomasfuchs So what you're saying is that, with enough vibe coding, we could destroy all social networks?
This sounds like pure upside.

@thomasfuchs I'd say it's the opposite; this is function over form taken to extremes.
Mice enthusiasts tend to be a weird bunch, often wanting crazy ergonomics, precise key throw, and lightness at all costs (other than dollar costs, they also want it cheap).
Where as keyboard weirdos care about aesthetics and will happily pay $400 for some mechanical switches.

@thomasfuchs I've used Hetzner but only their "storage box" service. Being from Canada, I basically use it as really distance off-site backup for my homelab.
They have very cheap web hosting. It seems geared towards PHP but they talk about a CGI interface for Ruby/Python.
https://www.hetzner.com/webhosting/
They also do straight up dedicated server rentals have have auctions for ones that wind up being cheaper than their min spec ones.

@thomasfuchs @galaxis That should honestly be a website, not a community on a closed platform.
Being tied to a platform is bad in both directions; people who need the resource may never find it because they don't happen to be on the platform and people can't leave the platform because that's where the resource is.
Alternatives exist; we had them long before social networks existed.
