@thomasfuchs As a former teacher, in some ways I'm happy to see academia get a real shake up. All those movies about whimsical professors who ignore the curriculum and teach their students critical thinking are now something that should actually happen.
While I don't want say that facts aren't important for learning, memorization and regurgitation doesn't produce critical thinkers. Better to teach them analysis and research skills so they understand how to verify a fact instead of just reciting whatever ChatGPT told them.

@thomasfuchs Some will claim that this will end innovation, but it'll do the opposite. People who manage to make $5 million will get creative on ways to redistribute that wealth so that they're allowed to either continue to own a business or enter politics.

@thomasfuchs Because they don't understand the difference between socialism and communism and they're scared of the latter.

@thomasfuchs I'm betting at the time it was $5,500 USD before accessories. So roughly $13,000 today.

@thomasfuchs I've noticed that it ebbs and flows.
We started with desktop apps.
Then web came along and gave us server apps.
Then mobile came along and suddenly we wanted native apps again.
Then client side web apps got good.
And now we stick those web apps inside desktop wrappers so that neckbeards with 64GB of RAM have something to whine about when they look at their otherwise unused system resources. -

@thomasfuchs yeah, this is unsurprising given how rare they are.
They're really poorly built and had all sorts of issues so the number of working units left is scares. On top of that they're a collectors item.

@thomasfuchs it's because software development is driven by fintech greaseballs and hype bros now. Think how much time, energy and effort were wasted on recent dead end ventures like NFTs, metaverses, etc.
Instead of people in the space thinking of ways to improve our lives, they're looking for ways to monopolize our attention and find new ways to make us pay for crap.

@thomasfuchs I know it's counter intuitive, but I kind of like it being clunky so the normies stay away. They're the ones who always ruin everything.
I want more people who aren't normal; people willing to put in a minimum effort. They tend to be the contributors, versus the consumers.
Remember how cool the internet used to be before everyone's parent's were able to get online?

@thomasfuchs At this point he's clearly just being a douche to get attention and we should all probably stop looking.
Being aimable probably didn't get the same engagement so to get the "I'm smart and people listen to me" dopamine hit, he's turned to the fertile soil of the assholes.

@thomasfuchs These are the kinds of figures I like to bring up when some "PC Master Race" type claims a Macbook is expensive; they've never been cheaper, my friend.
