hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 18-Sep-2024 03:56:48 JST hallenbeck @evan @luis_in_brief Ah so you're suggesting Mastodon could potentially be something like Signal or WhatsApp and, by default, be a private messenger (with encryption) that you then opt-in to on public posting?

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 18-Sep-2024 03:38:18 JST hallenbeck How do you get to know people if it defaults to private? I like the concept of private groups you can join or be invited to, like WhatsApp, Discord (etc) groups for "closed" social circles. When I joined Mastodon I knew nobody. How does one get get know people with private profiles but with whom you might share similar interests?

tl;dr just share this link with them:

Very handy! Hope Bluesky do something similar.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 12-Sep-2024 02:07:39 JST hallenbeck @gulfkiwi @BeAware The reasons I've been given/observed: a more familiar interface (it looks more like Twitter); easier to get started (it has a few nice onboarding features that Mastodon does not); less nerdy; less scoldy and lecturing. Those last two come up a lot. Seems many people joined Mastodon, found it to be quite severe in tone, often getting "scolded" (that term comes up a lot) for various things. The experience on BS is lighter in tone; more liberal and forgiving.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 01-Sep-2024 10:27:12 JST hallenbeck @BeAware why would they? VC funding tends to necessitates a certain degree of selfishness, for better or for worse. It's the nature of the beast.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 01-Sep-2024 10:22:03 JST hallenbeck @BeAware The only thing I'm interested in with regards to Bluesky development is what their plans are for interop with AP and how they plan to become a part of fedi, not spin up and alternate competing fedi. Ultimately, I'd like to see ideas from both worlds combined into one standardised, interoperable whole. But I get the sense in their comms and persistent lack of acknowledgement of AP that they see AP as a failure and AT as the one true protocol.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 01-Sep-2024 10:12:55 JST hallenbeck It's quite disheartened just how apparent it is becoming that BSky doesn't want to be a part of the #fediverse but wants instead to compete with and, presumably, extinguish it. Or have I misread what The Atmosphere is all about?

Would much rather see collaboration, not this naked, tech-bro, testosterone-rich competition.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 01-Sep-2024 06:01:49 JST hallenbeck One of the biggest problems #Mastodon has is the conflation of software and platform. It would be like calling email "Outlook". As in, "I'm on Outlook; it's great, you should join Outlook too".

We should be thinking in terms of collaboration, not competition.
The essence of federation is a union of different entities, along with shared and divided powers and responsibilities.
Open means being open in every sense, especially open minded.
The common foe that must be conquered is closed, corporate social. If open social is divided, then *it* will be conquered.
Implementation doesn't matter as much as interoperability.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 29-Aug-2024 04:39:54 JST hallenbeck It's a great idea! I love hashtags because they're portable, flexible and accessible. I like how official Mastodon has standardised on interpreting the last line in a post as a hashtag "footer". Very neat and agreeable. However, it's consistently *adding* hashtags to every message that's tricky, especially in a fast paced environment like a sports match.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 29-Aug-2024 04:09:01 JST hallenbeck @evan This is the exact use case for why I set up this account. It turned out, the thousand or so followers on my "main" account aren't interested in esoteric posts about Tottenham Hotspur, and with there being no algorithm, I felt it better to create a separate account I could post "freely" on.
Using (guppe) groups works quite well when added to a list and excluded from main timeline. Can't add hashtags to lists, though.
Would love smthg like the old Google+ Circles if you remember those?

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 29-Aug-2024 04:09:00 JST hallenbeck @evan I also quite like the idea of hashtag contexts. So you switch into, say, gardening context and all your posts have a user-defined set of hashtags automatically added until you switch context again. Very useful for current events (e.g. a sports match) in particular where it is easy to forget to add your hashtags.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 29-Aug-2024 02:38:58 JST hallenbeck @BeAware Is that for groups as well? As a heavy Guppe group user, having a built-in group function would be fantastic, especially in the absence of an algorithm. Something like the old G+ circles feature.

hallenbeck (hallenbeck@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 29-Aug-2024 02:31:13 JST hallenbeck Good sounding solution from #Bluesky to the quote post problem. Where is #Mastodon at with quote posts now? I thought I heard they were on the roadmap, but that was over a year ago.
