@katco Absolutely. If we didn't have an open source protocol with open governance, and other open source server implementations, this would be catastrophic.
This is definitely a point in favor of protocols!

@be @shauna @luis_in_brief @cwebber @root Yeah, excellent point. More than softening the blow, it would be an actual, binding commitment to keeping it open source.
Thank you again for raising this!
@be @shauna @luis_in_brief @cwebber @root Ooh, now that's interesting 👀
Granted I'm the one who is grumpy with the change and repeatedly saying, "we'd prefer no CLA," and not the one who decided to fork ... but nonetheless, I'll send this over to my colleagues at Element.
This would at least soften the blow. Thanks for sharing!
Your community is only as good as the worst behavior it tolerates.
That's it. That's the... toot.
I saw the earthquake toots from friends before the quake was even reported on the USGS website.
That's a first for me on fedi, and it's kind of thrilling. That was one thing I definitely missed after leaving Twitter. A perfect 1 year #fediversary present 🎁
Glad to see @matrix getting some love in the press this week. 115M users and counting, including those from institutions like the UN and the Republic of France, and communities like Debian, GNOME, and OSI! https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/decentralized-matrix-messaging-network-says-it-now-has-115m-users/

If your event has a Code of Conduct, but the Health and Safety policy boils down to "we only require what the authorities require," then there's work to be done.
Resume prompt injection 😂
I would that we weren't wasting energy and water on the escalating battle between ML – such as ML to pre-screen resumes and ML to circumvent that...
... but given the power dynamic between employers and employees, I adore this project: https://kai-greshake.de/posts/inject-my-pdf/
I'm proud to call Bradley Kuhn a friend and am celebrating him joining the growing community of out-and-proud FOSS leaders.
But it is a tragedy when someone is forced out.
I've watched as Eben Moglen and SFLC have abused the legal system and attacked SFC, wasting the scarce resources of one of FOSS's most important charitable nonprofits, and am devastated to learn about the personal abuse Bradley has endured.
FOSS friends: please take the time to read this. https://ebb.org/bkuhn/blog/2023/10/11/moglen-sflc.html
I've been raising issues with the phrases "non-code contributor" or "non-technical contributor" for at least a couple of years now.
And yet to this day I continue to see people of good will giving presentations and writing blog posts using that framing.
When will we learn that defining people by what they are not* is not a valid pathway to inclusion?
(* caveat because "non-technical contributors" are absolutely technical. It's a BS phrase.)
I've learned that tomorrow at 1pm there'll be a protest against the one homophobic and transphobic event being held at the OCC (there are two other events at the OCC this week, including the fabulous #FOSSY).
I'm not sure exactly how I plan to show up amid all my other responsibilities tomorrow, but I'll be there at least briefly to stand in solidarity.

I am proud to be an advisor to, and a moderator practice panel member of, the nascent nonprofit @iftas.
IFTAS is an effort to build a community of practice for Trust & Safety and moderation on the Fediverse, create shared resources (eg templates and blocklists), and perhaps even offer moderation services for instances that need the help.
It's early days, but it's a serious and thoughtful effort – and we know that if we don't address the needs of the most marginalized, we can't succeed.
Hello, fellow US-based people. If you, like me, are alarmed at COVID tracking infrastructure being pulled offline, consider: https://data.wastewaterscan.org/
Yes, it's more useful when in concert with other metrics, but we don't really have that 'luxury' anymore :blobcat_thisisfine:
@gabek Thank you ? Yeah, previous role was eliminated in cost reductions :blobcatnotlike:
Been a tough couple of weeks. Last night I had a realization that helped me put it in perspective:
I haven't gone more than 48 hours without a job or job offer since 2013.
And in 2013, I only had to support myself and Pico-cat. I'm carrying a lot more these days, supporting brothers, parents, and friends.
So, yeah... This is new territory for me.
Lots of people are coming through for me, so I know it's going to be okay. But my goodness. It is scary :blobcatsleepless:
@dentangle @karen @christi3k @phpledge Thanks for the tag! Karen, I just sent a follow up email as a gentle reminder :o)
Edited to add: I should note, Karen and I did have a great conversation a while back!
I feel confident about the direction her and the other FOSSY organizers are thinking. And I am likewise eager to see a policy codified on the sooner side, definitely critical to have that available for prospective participants to inform decision making.

Thank you to the organizers of @FOSSBackstage for setting a great example and making the event safer and more inclusive of immunocompromised people! _This_ is community leadership.
Mask mandates FTW ?

@evan Thank you! It's a great gig, I'm so chuffed :vibing:
Delighted to share that I'm now working as an associate of OSPOCO ? OSPOCO offers contract services supporting clients in doing all the things an internal Open Source Programs Office might do, from strategy to compliance and community relations. It's a "virtual OSPO." Learn more at https://ospo.co
I will continue my search for the next big adventure, and am glad to now be doing so from a position of strength following last week's unexpected news.
This is such an important moment to be intentional and proactive about how we shape our cultures.
Like, in general and here on the fediverse.
