(I'm still not convinced it wasn't a wind-up, but anyone sending a memo forbidding that would be guaranteed to aggravate the problem.) 3:O)>

Safer than staying with a burning tank that is likely to explode, also safer than staying in the open (someone might be annoyed enough to pick them off with an FPV drone or a mortar), and they might be able to sneak away through the woods - or surrender alive if intercepted.
