     Or they could have just gone into full denial mode and stayed in the tank.

     Safer than staying with a burning tank that is likely to explode, also safer than staying in the open (someone might be annoyed enough to pick them off with an FPV drone or a mortar), and they might be able to sneak away through the woods - or surrender alive if intercepted.
