No seriouslly though. A few of us are playing around with packet radio BBSes over HF radio, bouncing 300 baud AX.25 packets across the ionosphere. We're using it to send each other muffin recipes and travel advice.

One of us is sending messages about what birds they heard in their yard as it happens, tied to a ML model that identifies birdcalls. I'm trying to spin that up myself.

Not a as conference organizer, but as a board member of my synagogue, one of two that still wears a mask to shul: apathy and pushback

We held on to our mask requirements long after most places dropped them, and were cautious about having any kind of indoor events (into fall 2022). First from some folks who may have had a political bent, but then a few relatively "progressive" folks kept telling us it was keeping them from attending. (1/2)

My experience is that working on antennas is more likely to get 'are you talking to aliens?', which is also a good question to start answering 'yes' to.

Yes, APP. I have heard good things about others and valid complaints about APP. But they are good enough for most things and you can readily find accessories for them.

Fair point - I'm just a bit annoyed to be priced out of my local place. They used to be quite affordable, but clearly started catering to the tourism market. They seem to be charging upwards of 50% more compared to record stores elsewhere.

(This also is what a lot of the long time locals in this town feel about the effects wine industry, and I'm getting it...)

It's sad that the SUB POP Records store in the Seattle-Tacoma airport has significantly better prices on vinyl records than the historic local shop downtown.

I really want to support the local place, but I am pretty sure they are entirely catering to tourists at the price they're asking.

Our town has a tourism industry, and lots of folks complain about how our mainstreet is full of wine tasting rooms. (At least it's active and not abandoned!)

But as a result, local businesses do have problems making rent if they don't cater to the tourism market. It makes me wonder if the local place is being squeezed on rent or going for the extra $ from tourists too drunk to care.
