every time i see a livestreamer or youtuber doing something stupid for money i think of the science fiction author jeff noon who in 1997 imagined a future where anyone could buy a fly that they could program to buzz around the neighbourhood either filming everyone for dirt or shouting personal advertisements in tiny genetically modified voices

i remember thinking in 2008 that it seemed kind of dumb

now i realise i am kind of dumb

getting a transcript ready for a graduating student and my supervisor insisting that the accurate translation of the subject 「公共」is "Public" and not "Civics" is doing my head in

"it says so in the dictionary" makes the dictionary bad, mate. it doesn't make me wrong because there is no English language school in the world teaching the subject "Public" 🤡

i can put more effort into avoiding the consequences than doing the work because the fear of getting into trouble makes the monkey brain work harder

advice/insight please

i spent a lot of my high school life just not doing work that i didn't like doing (see: all homework that wasn't history) and just avoiding the consequences (detention doesn't mean anything if you don't go) while still doing everything important (tests)

turns out those consequences are having zero tolerance for the parts of my job that i don't like doing/don't see as important, and that i also avoid doing them

is this an #ADHD thing or...?
