Its really the only common build tool where a repository checkout is not by itself buildable and commonly (a friend has been fighting with the autoconf based build systems of both GnuTLS and LibreSSL lately) hard to make buildable

@chjara The systemd ProtectXXX= declarations are much more pragmatic IMO, its easy to say “this app doesn’t need /home” and similar

@chjara pledge is very hard to use when your entire app+dependencies codebase (incl. libc) isn’t in one repository

do you know which glibc functions open random magic files in /proc? I sure don’t

OpenSSH portable has a pile of #ifdefs making a mess of a bit of the codebase that have been unsupported and never enabled by the build system FOR 19 YEARS.

Honestly my forays into the OpenSSH code base do not leave me feeling happy :floofNervous:

@lanodan @tfunken It started with the ASN and IP space (rented from a friend) and a VPS.

Then I was like “Hmm, datacenter space is cheaper than I thought, maybe if I consolodate (almost) everything I can save some money and have more fun”

Spoiler alert: I was so so wrong about being able to save money. But everything has spiralled now and i’m having fun

@hrefna in practice I think it would be fairly easy to amend the protocol spec to say “If an Actor removes themself, delete all Objects exclusively attributedTo them”, which is also the semantics that exist today

But its not like this is easy! You still don’t really know which servers have a copy of a given object
