   Oh noo, the one hosting provider hosting 90% of the fediverse is not cool anymore :neocat_facepalm:

   Maybe we should diversify not just social media, but also the infrastructure running it, instead of just hosting everything at the one cheapest provider :neocat_think:

     @erincandescent @tfunken I feel like that's peak "I have my own chunk of the internet" but reminds me that I should probably move some of my stuff that's not at home (most is) to more local and non-profit ISPs. (And then same thing with home ISP)

     @lanodan @tfunken Did I need to acquire an ASN, some IPs, a 1U server, a half-rack at a local DC, a transit provider, and a connection to the local major internet exchange point?

     No

     Is it a money pit?

     By gods yes

     Is it the most fun way to do things?

     The vast majority of the time, Hell Yes!

     @erincandescent @tfunken Yeah, I'd guess it's like how self-hosting is fun, after all I've been doing that for over 10 years, mostly because it's so much better than the dread of dealing with support (even if in my experience they've been pretty good).
     Just feel like it's something I'd do gradually like how you probably shouldn't start self-hosting DNS and email right from the start, but eventually you should give it a try.

     @lanodan @tfunken It started with the ASN and IP space (rented from a friend) and a VPS.

     Then I was like “Hmm, datacenter space is cheaper than I thought, maybe if I consolodate (almost) everything I can save some money and have more fun”

     Spoiler alert: I was so so wrong about being able to save money. But everything has spiralled now and i’m having fun
